This game was 19-7 at the half. What happened in the 2nd half? On the web cast they kept saying that the Cov Cath players were fighting/arguing among themselves on the sidelines. I know it is only the first game of the year, but what does a defeat like this do to a team?

The Ryle Raiders backed up their No. 2 ranking in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky football coachesâ poll. Now theyâre coming after No. 1.Ryle geared up for next weekâs meeting with top-ranked Highlands by dismantling Covington Catholic 61-7 on Friday night in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown at Nippert Stadium.

With the game no longer in doubt and both teams substituting heavily, Ryle scored two final touchdowns to invoke the stateâs running-clock mercy rule. Ryle coach Bryson Warner quickly reminded his players that things wonât always be so one-sided.
âHumble yourselves quickly,â he told the players in a post-game huddle. âBecause we play a great football team next week.â
Despite the final score, Fridayâs game was close for most of the first half. The two teams traded punts throughout the first quarter, before Ryle junior running back Travis Elliott scored on a 20-yard touchdown run. The extra-point failed, and CovCath took the lead after Paul Ritter returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown.
But the Raiders seized the momentum back, scoring twice more in the first half on touchdown runs from quarterback Conner Hempel and Travis Elliott.
âOne of the first carries I got, I had a huge hole up front that you could drive a truck through,â Elliott said. âFrom then on I knew we were pretty much going to dominate.â
They did, especially on the ground.
Elliott carried 22 times for 268 yards and four touchdowns. Hempel carried 12 times for 151 yards and a score. Deion Mullens had nine carries for 118 yards and two touchdowns. As a team, the Raiders rushed for 603 yards. According to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association record book, the rushing total is 12th highest in state history.
After leading 19-7 at the half, the Raiders scored on their first three possessions of the second half to take a 40-7 lead.
Ryleâs defense played almost as well as its offense. The Raiders allowed just 128 rushing yards and 51 passing yards. They recovered two fumbles and intercepted two passes, one for a touchdown.
âThe scoreboard doesnât show that it was a shutout,â said senior linebacker Court Mace. âBut our defense believes it was a shutout. Their offense couldnât get past us and we were flying to the football on every play.â
CovCath entered the game ranked fourth in the area. It was the Colonelsâ worst loss since a 61-0 loss to Highlands in 2008.
âTheyâre good,â said CovCath coach Dave Wirth. â(Now) we just have to make sure the kids donât lose faith in themselves and get back to work.â
Ryle, meanwhile, turns its attention to Highlands. This season is the second of a two-year, four-game contract between Highlands and Ryle. The two teams will play again in the final week of the regular season.
Highlands, which on Friday extended its in-state winning streak to 42 games with a blowout victory over DuPont Manual, beat the Raiders twice last year.
âWe just have to not let this go to our heads,â said Elliott. âWe canât afford to have a bad week of practice. We have to give it our all and come out fired up.â
