Was this the weakest year ever in KY High School Basketball?

How do we find fault in these great accomplishments.....

Amen! I was thinking the same thing when I saw the title of this thread. I really find it sad that so many people enjoy clinging onto the negative things in any situation in life. This year's championship should be a celebration all of the mountains and all of the small schools across the state should be proud to witness, be a part of, and claim for their own. Shew, people are so strange sometimes!!!

Preach it brother. I am there with ya, even if I am a Valley grad I would root like this and be proud of anyone from the mountains!! It is a community thing you know.

I attended my first state tournament in 1971 and since that time I have seen 33 state tournaments which includes a streak since 1986 without missing one.
The 2010 state tournament was as strong as most. There were about 6 teams that could have won this year's tournament. Of those 6, each would have been in the hunt each and every year.
Many times the most talent does not win the tournament, but the TEAM that is playing the best that week. SV is alot like Breckinridge who won the tournament years ago. They won it with team work, passing, defense, and rebounding. This year they were the best in those areas.
They were not the fastest, highest jumping, or physical team in the tournament. But they were the best TEAM and their effort this year would have won several past tournaments.

goodguy Wrote:Shelby Valley is a very good team, however, they had a cake walk to the final game. Paducah was probably one of the weakest teams in the tournament. West Jessamine and Mason Co. were definitely not one of the top teams in the state.

The upper bracket was brutal. Ballard, Scott Co. Warren Central, Shelby Co., Christian Co. and Corbin. Ballard and Scott Co. had dog fight games to get to where they did.

It didn't suprise me to see Ballard get beat in the finals. After beating Shelby Co., Warren Central and Scott Co. in three of the toughest games they've played all year over a span of three days, probably wore Ballard down. Also the emotional high they came off of after the first three close wins. They possibly thought they had the championship won after beating Scott Co. and underestimated Shelby Valley.

Coming into the championship game wore out and emotionally drained probably had something to do with the outcome.

Not taking anything away from Shelby Valley because they were a very good team, but the "stars were alligned" for SV. Their draw could not have been any better if they were to pick the teams they played in the Sweet Sixteen themselves.

Now to your comment about basketball being down. I don't agree, there were more top teams in the state than there has been in years; and as far as talent being down, no way. I bet there will be more kids going on to the next level this year than there has been in several years. The 2010 class was loaded. No Darrius Miller but several just below his level.

Would you have stated this if Ballard had the same draw as Shelby Valley and had won the championship. I doubt it. There is no asterisks or noted handicaps of who got a better or worse draw. You are incorrect in stating Ballard beat those teams in three days. It was four. They had a day of rest. Shelby Valley did not. They also played earlier Saturday then Shelby Valley therefore, giving them more time to rest . As far as being emotionally drained, in 2005 South Laurel defeated Pleasure Ridge Park in overtime on Saturday morning and went on to defeat Warren Central in the state championship. So maybe mountain kids are not as athletically "gifted" as a whole as some of the larger schools in larger populated areas but this may be evidence that they are mentally "tougher". Shelby Valley is a small school with enrollment of around 500 students whose team was all home grown boys. Scott County had an all-star AAU team with transfers from all over the state with a student enrollment of over 2200 kids. Shelby County over 1800. Ballard over 1700. Warren Central around 1100. 50 years down the road people are not going to remember Shelby Valley as the team that won the state tournament coming out of an easy bracket. They are going to be remembered as a small school who won the state championship against a school twice their size. There will be no asterisks. Just the statement: Shelby Valley - 2010 KHSAA State Champions.

I read a post "on another board", that was similar to this one. They lamented the fact that the championship game would be a joke. "Why did Ballard have to play such an inferior team in Shelby valley?" "The "real" state championship game was Ballard-Scott County."

Anyway, we see how that all worked out. And that dude got seriously flamed by "bulletin board justice"! It was sweet.

Yes, I would have said the same thing if Ballard had the same draw. Central got this same draw last year except for Eastern being up there with them.

Man! Don't get your panties in a wad! A couple of you Shelby Valley fans have a bad case of "little man syndrome". I was not knocking Shelby Valley, I even stated that they were a very good team. All I was saying was they definitely had the easier path to the finals. Is that not true???

No wadded panties here. Just get tired of comments by posters trying to minimize the achievements of a group of kids. I am not a Shelby Valley fan and do not live in Pike County. As far as "little man syndrome" I assume you are referring to school size. Well it so happens that the school I am involved with is a 5A school with around a 1000 students. So no "little man syndrome" here.

Not everything in life is easy. Ballard had a tougher path but more rest.

Just look at the D-1 /D2 talent in the state this season.

2010 Class

Curtis Washington- USC
Dakotah Euton - Akron
Chad Jackson - James Madison
Elijah Justice - Louisville
Ricardo Johnson - Ohio ( beat G*town)
Josh Sewell- Miami
Treg Setty - So Illionois
Donovon Gibbs - IUPUI
Shaquille Wilson- undecided
Ashley Hatfield - undecided
Ge-layn guyn-undecided( 4 d1 offers)
Keiston Jones- undecided
Ian Chiles- undecided
Jarrod Polson-undecided
Donovon Johnson- undecided

2011 class has some more great talent.

Remy Abell-( 3 D-1 offers)
Chane Behanan- (4* player, who has national buzz/7 D-1 offers)
George Fant- ( 8 D-1 offers)
Timmy Knipp - (3 D-1 offers)
Vinny Zollo - ( 3 D-1 offers)
Robbie Stenzel
Jordan Shanklin- ( one offer)
Jermaine Jackson

Other underclassmen, that IMO will play college ball.

Jaylen Beckham- Lex Cath ( offers from a Pac-10 and Big East schools)
Mikey Terry- Fairview ( may have a couple offers)
James Quick- Trinity
Jason Hatcher - Trinity
Darryl Hicks - South Oldham ( holds offer from IU Hooisers.)

Overall and generall speaking, this is one of the most talented sets of clases that I can remember in KY. Dont let the fact that SV winning state tarnish your view of the state. EJ and the rest of Valley really was just that good.

Ok, now I keep hearing this, but according to NCAA rules (him being a freshman)can it?? I know freshman Kristian of Gallatin co has received a registration card from the Akron Zips, which is allowed.

Chris Harrison received offers from Bradley, Akron, and WKU before he played a minute of high school basketball right before his freshman year at Trinity, so I'm guessing it is. He has since changed his last name to Harrison-Docks and moved to Michigan.
#43
Who has Knipp received D1 offers from?
#44
Treg Setty is of the 2011 class.

Exactly! I would be happy for any type of story like this one. It just so happened to be my school.

Yea? How many of the SV faithful gave Landon and his team mates any credit the year they beat SV to go to state? I don't remember any. How many of you said Landon would ride pine when he decided to be a "preferred walkon" at UK? I remember a lot of you saying it.

If you feel inclined to go two years back and find any post in which I bashed Paintsville team, please show me. I was proud for Landon and Paintsville when they got down to State and won the first round, I dont think that any true fans would have put them down for the fantastic season that year! And when he got in the game at UK, it made me feel proud yelling for someone from my own region out on the floor. So clam down my friend, I will always pull for the mountain team to may us proud.

I still try to keep track of Landon and I will always remember that team as one that was above the norm for a mountain team. Interesting enough when I was staying in Lexington for the sweet 16, he ended up staying in the same motel for the night before the finals. It kind of shows the support from others around the mountains.
