Quote:A switch in defenses paid off for the Jeffersontown High School girls' basketball team Friday night in its 58-56 upset victory over Christian Academy in the 28th District final.
Trailing by 13 points in the second quarter and by 29-25 at halftime, the host Lady Chargers (19-8) paid special attention to CAL's two all-region players, Nita Slaughter and Allison Karst, in the second half.
"Midway through the third quarter we went to a triangle-and-two and chased Slaughter and Karst,' J'town coach Jeff Kyser said. J'town outscored CAL 17-9 for a 42-38 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The winning points came from junior guard Chasity Bell and senior guard Cami Calderon. Tied 54-54, Bell made a layup after a steal and Calderon followed with two free throws for a 58-54 lead with 38 seconds to go.
But defense, especially against Slaughter, was the difference, Kyser said.
The 6-foot-2 University of Louisville signee scored just 10 points, five less than her average. Her only field goal came in the first quarter. Karst had 16 points, with China Dow leading the team with 21.
Six-two junior Lenette Holt led J'town with 18 points, Calderon had 17 and Aisjah Roan 10.
The victory over the Lady Centurions (23-5), ranked No. 13 in The Courier-Journal's Litkenhous Ratings, avenged a 52-38 loss on Feb. 2 and snapped CAL's six-game winning streaK.
"A big win for us ... unbelievable," Kyser said.
Both teams advance to next week's Seventh Region Tournament.
