Bob Schneider, the all-time winningest coach in Kentucky high school football history, has retired.
The Newport Central Catholic icon spent the previous 44 years at his alma mater.
Along the way he won three state titles, led the Thoroughbreds to nine championship game appearances and posted a 345-183-2 record.
He met with his players this morning to inform them of his decision.
Schneider, 72, was unable to coach the final four and a half games on his record. Before a late-season game against Lloyd, the coach felt tightness in his left leg. A team physician told him to go to the hospital, which he did at halftime. Doctors discovered blood clots and a heart aneurysm. After offseason open-heart surgery, Schneider decided to retire.
âWhen you mention NewCath football, his name is synonymous with it,â said NewCath athletic director Rob Detzel. âI have so much appreciation for all the time he put in and all the sacrifices he made for the program. Itâs his lifeâs work. Things will be different and Bob will be missed. Heâs had a big impact on a lot of kids.â
Schneiderâs son and offensive coordinator Dave served as the teamâs coach during his fatherâs leave of absence. The school has yet to name a successor, meaning the program has its first coaching vacancy since 1966.
âWe donât have anyone weâre ready to just hand it over to,â Detzel said. âWeâre going to start meeting and talking to the assistant coaches. We want to get a feel for what we need for the program and go from there. Coach Schneider is one of those people weâre definitely going to talk to.â
Schneider was just 27 years old when he became NewCathâs football coach. He originally had his eyes on the vacant basketball and baseball coaching jobs, not the football job that also was open.
âThe principal, who was a brother, called me in and asked me to be (athletic director) and football coach,â Schneider said in 2005. âI said sure. ⦠It was one of the most fortunate days of my life.â
The Thoroughbreds went 8-2 during Schneiderâs first season and he was named the Greater Catholic League coach of the year. In his eighth year he led the Thoroughbreds to the playoffs for the first time.
In 1984 he led the school to its first state football title. The school also reached the finals in 1985, 1986, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Its last championship came in 2006. The program recorded just eight losing seasons in Schneiderâs 44-year tenure.
In 2005 Schneider won his 293rd game to pass former North Hardin coach Joe Jaggers for first time on the stateâs all-time list. Later that year, during the Thoroughbredsâ state championship run, he topped 300 victories.
Dudley Hilton, currently the head coach at Bell County, is just 13 victories behind Schneider on the stateâs all-time list.
In addition to his coaching duties, Schneider also served as the schoolâs athletic director for 35 years before resigning in 2001. Heâs also a member of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association board of control.
Schneider wasnât immediately available for comment Friday.

It has been discussed all fall that Dan Wagner, Defenisve Coordinator will move up into that job.

Lol, It has been a "definite thing" each of the last five years. Even this year it was one of those things where no one was going to believe it until it actually happened.

i am a bell county grad and i thought it would be only a matter of time before coach hilton passed him and i am sure someone will pass hilton eventually.
all that being said, i hate that he had to make the decision to leave based on his health. i understand why he did, but when a coach who has done so much for high school football as he has, you hate to see have to step down due to health. i would have much rather seen him win a state championship and say it was a great time but felt it was time to go.

NCC will have some BIG, BIG shoes to fill overall to this icon to Kentucky High School Football over the years he has represented a program he built. I totally admire Coach Schneider and I want to congrat his accomplishments over the 44 years he has spent at NCC. The biggest question of all is WHO WILL REPLACE HIM?

With that many years coaching, he should be the winningest coach if not ranked very high. I guess Dudley Hilton will pass him up now. Not for sure which is the best, but if you stay long enough you will win a lot of games. I do wish coach the best of luck and I know he has changed a lot of lives.

If I am a guessing man, I say it's Dan Wagner, the D coordinator. He has been doing things of late that would lead you to believe he is the odds-on favorite.

You still have to produce and I think that's a simplistic statement. :please:
Think of the teams over those 42 years that NCC contended with.
They used to play Highlands regularly. Beechwood and NCC shared the same class for years. Bellevue when they were a great program in the late 70's were an impasse.
NCC didn't play a lot of po-dunk schools that never won and never will. Think of how many more games he might have won had he not played many of those NKY powers on an annual basis. :Thumbs:

This is a legendary coach who built a program and stuck around 44 yrs. Just think how many lives this man touched during his coaching career, great job Coach, now enjoy your retirement, you have nothing else to prove.

Congrats to Coach Bob Schneider. Coach Redman also retires., leaving Hilton, Haywood and Glaser to chase the record. Which, of the three, gets it?

Do not forget he started coaching when NC was playing in the GCL in the late 1960 teams like Elder,Big Moe, ST.X and I think he won it once. Great coach better person.
