Holmes 72 Christian Co 69 F/OT
#1
Final.

Elijah Pittman lead the way for the Bulldogs with 33 points, none bigger than the 2 FT's that sealed the game in OT. Ricardo Johnson fouled out of this one with just 4 points, and Holmes was trailing by 11 when Ric left the game. Holmes was down 2 when K. Rice hit a game tying shot at the buzzer of regulation.

In overtime the teams traded buckets. Holmes was up 70-69 with 17 seconds left in game, during that possession Pittman was fouled and went to the line and knocked down 2 free throws to put Holmes up 3 and CC could not convert before the buzzer.

Very close game indeed. I was not sure when icking this game and errered to a close affair not knowing how the Dogs would come out.
#3
I knew it would be close but I was nervous when Holmes was down 11 and Rico fouled out, it seemed like the makings of a 15 to 20 point CC win, but hats off to Mr. Pittman as he put this team on his back tonight and pulled out the win.

Congrats Holmes. Nice come back win.

Isn't Christian County the team that people were downplaying and saying they were having a bad year?
#10
Christian Co came into this game 13-2, not having a bad year at all...
There 2 losses came to Mason Co by 3 and to East Carter by 3 both at the Ashland Invitational, and if I am not mistaken they were not playing healthy at that time.

Did Wilson for CC play in this game?

Not sure but I am pretty sure Avery did not play for Holmes either. I will try to check on both...

Thanks, look forward to your reply.

Two of the commonwealth's better squads battling out on what seemed to go down as a regular season classic. Holmes' Pitttman stepped up and played large in a big game.

Look for both these teams to be in Rupp come March.

Holmes showed tonight why they are one of the top 3 teams in the state.

Dogs played without Avery and Ricardo Johnson fouls out with 5 minutes left in the game after scoring just 4 points and they still find a way to pull out the W. Elijah Pittman was a man among boys tonight with 34 points and single handedly carried his team. Pittman showed tonight why he's the best big man in the state and IMO hands down the best player in the state when he actually plays motivated basketball. Donovan Kates is considered one of the best in the jr class and Pittman abused him tonight.

Holmes showed a lot of character in the game. Every time they'd come back and pull within 3 or 4, CC would go on another run to push the lead to 8 or 9. In the third quarter Holmes closed to within 1 at 42-41 but CC would go on a 7-0 run to take an 8 point lead.

The Colonels would push their lead out to 10 and hold an 8-10 point lead up until the 5 minute mark when they extended the lead to 56-45 after Ricardo Johnson fouled out. Holmes went on a 7-0 run to close within 56-52, but CC again would extend their lead to 8 at 60-52 with around 3 minutes left. Holmes went on a 9-1 run to tie the score at 63-63 but Christian Co scored with 3 seconds left to take a 65-63 lead.

Kevon Rice then made the shot of his life as he hit a buzzer beating shot to send the game in to OT at 65 apiece.

Holmes got the first 2 points of OT to take a 67-65 lead and would trade baskets with CC until around 30 seconds left when they converted one of two free throws to take a 70-69 lead. Christian Co came down and missed a shot and Holmes got the ball back with 17 seconds left. Pittman then got fouled and went to the line and hit 2 big free throws to put the Dogs up 72-69. Christian Co couldn't convert on their final possession and Holmes wins the game despite playing the last 10 minutes, OT included, without Ricardo Johnson.

IMO this victory shows that Holmes has more depth than people realize. Holmes played without Avery tonight and their team leader fouls out with his team down 11 in the 4th quarter.

Hayes continues to step up. He had 11 points tonight and although Rice struggled early, he hit a big shot when it mattered and finished with 10 points.

Holmes is starting to put things together at the right time. Their bench and role players are finally starting to step up in big games.

I'll let you be the judge of CC when they come to Shelby Valley next week, but they're far from struggling.

They came in to this game with an average margin of victory at around 25 ppg and average 76 ppg. Their only two losses this season came to Mason Co by 3 and East Carter by 3 in OT...both games they played without their team leader, Shaquille Wilson who is one of the top 15-20 seniors in the state.

Christian Co also beat Liberty Tech, TN who is one of the only two teams to beat Ballard this year.

Christian Co lost just 1 player from last year's region 2 championship team and return several D1 prospects in 6'4 Shaquille Wilson and 6'5 Donovan Kates.

This is a very impressive win for Holmes considering Avery didn't play and Ricardo fouled out with 5 minutes left in the game and Holmes down 11.

Just spoke with Jeremiah Johnson and Wilson did play tonight.

He said the biggest difference in the last 5 minutes of the game was just that Holmes stepped things up on the defensive end.

Holmes 72 Christian Co. 69

Christian Co. 21 14 14 16 4 69
Holmes 11 20 12 22 7 72

Christian Co. (14-3) -- Hickey 27, Kates 20, Lewis 9, Gayle 6, Tandey 3, Wilson 2, McDuffen 2.

Holmes (13-4) -- Pittman 34, Hayes 11, Rice 8, Herndon 6, J. Johnson 5, R. Johnson 4, Slusher 4.

Sounds like this was the Elijah Pittman and Anthony Hickey show tonight.

BTW, Herndon had the tip in at the buzzer to send it to OT....not Rice.

CC must have a solid team can't wait till they come to SV then maybe we will have a measuring stick to judge SV. My hat's off to Pittman anyway he must of really come to play tonight.

Re: "BTW, is everyone satisfied with how many points Holmes scored? I've said time after time if teams would actually try to get out and run with Holmes you'd see them score more points. This game proves my theory."

We saw same in the Sweet 16 last year. Christian County tried to run Holmes out of the gym and Holmes simply outscored them. Both LexCath and Elliott ran uptempo offenses against Holmes and lost. L'ville Central played a controlled game in the final. Holmes can play up tempo with any team in the state, but to get out of the 9th, you've got to be able to play slowdown half-court vs. disciplined teams like NewCath. You've got to know how to win when the point total for both teams is only in the 80s. Talented Holmes teams in the past haven't been able to do this. The Henley-coached teams know how to play both styles.

Pittman finished the game with 34 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

Game story from nky.com:

Jaydale Herndon hit a 15-footer with 2:30 remaining in overtime and Holmes held on for a 72-69 come-from-behind win over Christian County Saturday evening in boys' basketball action at the Joe B. Hall Classic in Montgomery County.

Holmes, ranked No. 1 in the latest Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, improved to 13-4.

Herndon, a senior guard, had sent the game into overtime with a tip-in at the buzzer in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 65.

Christian County held the lead through most of the game until senior forward Elijah Pittman hit a 3-pointer to tie the score at 63 with 45 seconds remaining in regulation. Herndon followed a Christian County go-ahead bucket with the buzzer-beater.

Pittman led all scorers with 34 points and added nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Herndon finished with six points.

From kentucky.com

No. 9 Holmes 72, No. 7 Christian County 69 (OT): On a night when a lot of things didn't go right for them, the defending state champ Bulldogs found a way to win.

Holmes rallied from an eight-point deficit late in regulation to tie it on Jaydale Herndon's put-back at the buzzer, then survived in overtime.

The Bulldogs' 6-7 senior Elijah Pittman had 24 of his 34 points in the second half, including three clutch free throws in the last 48 seconds.

Holmes senior Ricardo Johnson, rated the top player in the state in the pre-season, was in foul trouble most of the night. He had four points before fouling out with five minutes left in regulation.

Holmes Coach David Henley credited Jeremiah Johnson's defense on Christian County's Anthony Hickey down the stretch for turning the game around. Hickey had 27 points but did not score in the last seven minutes.

Donovan Kates had 20 points for the Colonels, who had an eight-game winning streak snapped.
