to a boys'-girls' doubleheader that started late and featured two foul-filled games, Friday night's Scott at Simon Kenton boys' basketball game didn't end until nearly 11 p.m.

Fans yawned; children fell asleep on laps; students left early.

And Scott outlasted the Pioneers for a 75-63 victory.

Simon Kenton, which trailed most of the game, cut the lead to 59-55 with 6:46 to play in the game.

But then Scott senior Nikola Gligorevic made a layup.

Simon Kenton then was called for a technical foul, resulting in two E.J. Murray free throws. After the foul shots, Scott inbounded to Kellen Smith, who hit a 3-pointer to stretch the lead to 66-55 and effectively end the Pioneers' comeback chances.

"That was a seven-point play," said Simon Kenton coach Trent Steiner. "That's the difference in the game. You can't give up seven-point plays in basketball and expect to win."

Scott outrebounded the Pioneers 40 to 24. Gligorevic, who shared team-high scoring honors with Murray with 23 points, also tallied 19 rebounds.

"It seemed like he had 84," Steiner said.

Scott coach Brad Carr wasn't surprised in his senior post player's performance.

"When he comes to play, he's one of the better kids in the area," Carr said. "Last year he had 15 double-doubles. This year now he just has two. But he was a man tonight. We've been pushing him lately. It was nice to see him respond the way he did."

Simon Kenton senior guard Langdon Barnes led all scorers with 24 points. Casey Sorrell helped pace the Pioneers with 16 points.

For the Eagles, ranked fifth in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, the win was their third straight since an overtime loss to top-ranked Holmes.

"We know that in February and in the postseason, you have to grind out these types of games," Carr said. "That's what we're starting to do now. That was good to see tonight. We took care of business late when we needed to."

I believe this is the Scott Eagle's first win ever over a team coached by Mike Listerman. Congrats Eagles!
