Shamrocks Improve to 9-0 on Season, One Win Away From Tying Best Mark in School History
LEXINGTON, Ky. Trinity came back from a 19-point first-half deficit to defeat Boone County 73-68 in overtime in the first round of the Republic Bank Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic High School in Lexington, Ky.
It was the largest comeback by a Trinity team under head coach Mike Szaboâs leadership.
âI am really proud of the way our team fought back today after being down big early,â said Szabo.
âOur bench was great for us today. When we had some guys get in foul trouble, our bench stepped up and made the big plays to help us win this game.â
Josh Sewell led the Shamrocks with 21 points and seven rebounds while Melvyn Little had 16 points. Daniel Corbett had 11 points off the bench for the Shamrocks.
Trinityâs bench contributed 22 points, including five points in overtime.
With the win, the Shamrocks improved to 9-0 on the season. It is the best start for the Shamrocks since starting 9-0 in 2004-2005. The best mark in school history came in 1995-1996 when the Shamrocks started the year 10-0.
Boone County used a 29-4 run in the first and second quarters to take a 33-14 lead before Trinity closed the half on a 10-2 run to narrow the margin to 35-24 at the half. The 10-2 run saw the Shamrocks pile up five baskets on fast break points as the Shamrocks were able to get behind the press of Boone County. Sewell had 11 points in the first half while freshman Chris Harrison had seven, including five in the first quarter.
The Shamrocks and Rebels played even through much of the third quarter, before Trinity finally started a run of its own, a Darick Nix three pointer with 3:12 remaining in the third started a 20-2 run that lasted 5:34.
Szabo is now the second winningest coach in program history as he registered his 138th win as coach of the Shamrocks, passing Dave Aberli who had 137 wins in ten years.
Trinity returns to action on Sat., Dec. 27, 2008 in the quarterfinals of the Republic Bank Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic High School in Lexington, Ky. against George Rogers Clark. Tipoff is set for 9:00 p.m.
