Should be a great day of basketball for a lot of kids. Hope to see a good turnout.

Great turnout, 7 kids attending. Mr. Martin has his work cut out for him at AC. I hear Martin is having a hard time getting boys to play!

Wow....hard to believe that only 7 showed up....but can you really blame them....this is the Landon Slone that would not play at Allen Central because he wanted to play at Paintsville with Bill Mike Runyon. What were they thinking at Allen Central?

$25 seems a little high IMO. That probably had something to do with the turnout as well.

Their wasn't much advertising for this either.

Why would Slone be asked to be there? I don't understand that at all. I am not shocked with the bad turn out at all.

For just pure shooting skills, why didn't AC ask Aaron Crum to conduct a shooting clinic. This is not to insinuate that he is the same class of player as Slone, but he had beautiful shooting technique.
I'm not sure the AC returning players would be too happy about greeting Slone since they weren't good enough for him to play with during his high school career.
He should have had his shooting clinic at Paintsville.
Why is the current AC coach wanting to showcase Slone anyway?

Seriously, why Landon Slone??? Sure he is playing for UK but we are talking about a player that had to walk on. I'm not trying to bash Landon at all, He is a very good player but is he good enough to host a shooting clinic?? IMO, not even close. Words of advice, Get a bigger name player and lower the price to about 10-15 dollars and you will have a better turnout.

LOL good enough to host a shooting clinic? Who do you suggest they get in there? Reggie Miller? Ray Allen?
Despite Landon going to Paintsville, he still has ties to the Martin area. You can't fault AC for trying to make a few bucks on the home grown kid.

I just can't see a walk-on drawing a big crowd. If they are going to do that they should've contacted Pikeville College's coach to get a few of his players down to run the camp because they could have more to offer a young kid about the game of basketball.

I will agree with this statement. The talent-level in NAIA is EXTREMELY under-rated. I sat near Kenny Walker when UK and Pikeville played this past year and he said " I would give you all our big men (minus Patterson) for Pikeville's bigman (talking about PC center Jeff Ferguson)". I think that would have been a much better idea.

I dont understand this either, what about Jeremy Hall, someone who actually played there, dont know if he's still around be I think he went to Wisconsin for a while, Landon turned his back on AC and now they try and showcase him??

Like I said I wasn't bashing on Landon at all, and I'm pretty sure I didn't say they needed to get some of the best shooters of all time either. I was just saying that if they wanted to make some bucks, Get a bigger name player that actually knows the game of basketball to teach the young players some fundamentals. Landon is a freshman in college and I'm pretty sure his basketball IQ isn't very high and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have as much to offer at a shooting clinic as a Jeff Sheppard type of player. Heck I wouldn't care to bet that I could host a shooting clinic and teach the players as much as Slone could.
08-04-2008, 10:10 PM
That was a terrible decision by coach Mark Martin. Doing this was a smack in the face to great ac players such as jeremy hall, Thomas Jenkins, shawn newsome etc... what was he thinking?
Johnny Martin would have never done that because he has a lot of class.

You stated above that you weren't bashing Landon, but in your last sentence it seems like you did.
I don't know who you are or where your from but I've watched Landon play sports all my life. Landon was born with a basketball in his hand and he matured much quicker than others his age and it showed in middle school when he was putting up 40 points. But to say that Landon has no basketball IQ is b/s. For someone that got 1st-team all-state honors and was mentioned for the Mr. Basketball honor I believe that he had to have some basketball IQ.
I agree with a lot of posters, why have Landon at an Allen Central basketball clinic when you could have had some of the older guys that were legends in Floyd County? maybe someone like "King" Kelley Coleman.

I never once said that Landon was a bad player. He can play some great basketball, all I was pointing out is that he's not good enough to host a basketball clinic. Just because he can go out there and score lots of points doesn't make him Michael Jordan and it doesn't mean that he knows the game of basketball good enough to teach it to some youngsters. He is a freaking walk-on for crying out loud and everyone in this area thinks he is a basketball god. Another name you could throw out there is Chris Lofton. I'm sure he would have drew a lot young players out, he was one of the best shooters of all time at the college level.

I understand your point, but Landon did get first-team all-state, thats a huge honor. Not too many people that played high school basketball can say that they were first-team all-state. But at some extent Landon could provide some of the things he learned going to all these basketball camps and AAU trips to Las Vegas. But Landon Slone is possibly the closest thing to a shooting star that Allen Central could convince into coming. Slone could also relate to these kids as most wouldn't know who Jeff Shepherd or a Kelley Coleman where.

Yeah, I agree that alot of them wouldn't know a Jeff Shepherd type player. No hard feelings tho, I'm glad you see the point I was trying to make and not think I was bashing on Landon at all. I would never do that because he is one of the best to come through the mountains here recently.

Why on earth would you get someone that was a good player in an awful region to come help out at a camp. The points don't mean anything. Heck I think I could come avg 20 pts or better in the 15th. Why wouldn't you try to attract bigger names than a Landon Slone is beyond me. You say he has things to offer from going to basketball camps and playing AAU . Why not get someone like a Jeff Shepherd who actually played at UK and has something to offer. What is Slone going to teach them? Everyone is acting like it's such a big honor to walk-on at UK. It was such a big honor that they asked four other kids to do it and Slone was the only one who felt it was timeworthy. I just think that Allen Central handled this all wrong and should've got someone who didn't bail on them and actually cared about some "Rebel Pride". I personally don't know Slone but it seems that he is a very nice kid. I'm not trying to sit here and bash Slone but it just upsets me that Allen Central did this. So nothing against you personally Landon.

So your saying that you don't learn anything by going to D1/Elite Camps or playing against some of the nations top talent?
And yes, its one **** of an honor to be asked by the coach of the Kentucky Wildcats to be a walk-on especially coming from this area.
08-04-2008, 11:46 PM
I agree that Landon has learned from playing in D1/Elite Camps, but Landon has not played in his 1st College Season basketball game yet and he still has alot of learning to do. I still think it was premature for Allen Central to host a shooting camp with him as the host. What happened to Landon in the Allstar game when he only played, I think 4 minutes each half and scoring 2 pts total game? Where was the shooting at during that game?

Ok Mark has been a close friend of the Slone family. Him and Landon's Dad Phil played ball together at AC. Him and Landon talk nearly everyday and they thought it would be a good idea to do this. But as for this thread, its done.
