Is there any way to get out of an early termination fee?
#1
I have Nextel, and during a 30 minute phone conversation today, the call was dropped nearly 20 times. That's 20+ times that I had to re-dial, only to have the call dropped again after about 10 seconds.

This happens way too often, and the battery life of the phone has diminished quite a bit since it was bought.

I only have 7 months left on my 2 year contract, but is there any way I can get out of my contract before then?

I would really like to switch over to Cingular/AT&T, but I don't want to spend the $200 for the ETF.

You can pay, but most of the time they will prorate the fee depending on how long until your contract expires. I terminated one with Appalachian one time and had to pay through the nose and their service was shotty..... The other option would be to go down to bare bones on the one phone and go ahead and get an ATT plan!

I don't know about phones, but when I worked for DirecTV the only times I recall being able to waive an ETF was when a soldier was reporting to duty outside the country (they had to fax a letter from the military proving so) and when it was determined that they could not get a signal from the satellites from their service due to a line of sight issue from something outside of their control. To terminate the later of these 2 though, we sent out a technician to verify and charged the customer $80 for a service call that told them what they already knew (that they couldn't get a signal).

It must have been a while back that you had Appalachian Wireless huh? Wink

Termination fees here at Appalachian Wireless are prorated based on the amount of time you have left on your contract. It is $10.00 for every month you have left on the contract. Example: you have 7 months left, it would be $70.00 plus your current bill. I believe AT&T charges you $170.00 no matter how much time you have left. Basically the only way to get out of them are to tell them you are moving out of their service area and have to switch carriers, or that the person, who's name the account is in, died. Even then you have to provide a death certificate. Other than that, odds aren't too good. However, try the moving out of the service area thing. It might work, and it might not, but it is your best shot.

2 years ago.... I could not get a signal at my house which was in close proximity to a tower. I had less than a year remaining and paid more than 200 bucks PLUS my bill..... policies change.... I am glad to see this one has!
