Belfry
#1
Going to be so strange this season seeing the Pirates take the field with Coach Haywood not on the sidelines. Huge shoes to fill!

With practice getting ready to start, Wondering what everyone thought about their personnel this season. I know they have some quality returning starters. Any transfers in? Or unexpected departures? Is Chase Varney elbow healed up for the season?

From what I know, they return basically everyone and will be a legit title contender. Junior/senior dominated roster. I pray for a Belfry vs Beechwood matchup in the playoffs.

Their best running back Ace Caudill left so I heard.

Are you sure?  I’ve not heard anything to support that.

1. There will definitely be a balance between the honoring of Coach Haywood and the excitement of new coach Matt Varney and returning a great team.
2. BHS returns 18-19 starters out of 22. Colton Whitt, who broke his leg against JC, will be back. Young star to be Jameson Chaffin returns after a collarbone injury and will more than likely step into a spot on defense.
3. Sorry TRUTH, but ACE Caudill will 100% be back.
4. Chase Varney's throwing program is going good and he will become maybe the only 4 year starter ever at QB for BHS. The list is short if he is indeed not the first.
5. The usual 2A suspects are out there with Beechwood, LCA, OCath, Mayfield, and Somerset lurking.
6. Belfry needs to win early and often against a great schedule of East Carter, Central, JC, Southwestern and Pikeville. Closing out the regular season on the road at LCC is a good match up. They definitely have a great chance to stay at home through most of the playoffs.
7. Obviously injuries are always a big part of any team's equation. Hanging on to the football and an improved scoring defense are keys. Not counting special teams, BHS only lost 3 fumbles last year. An opening drive fumble against JC, a blind side sack on Chase against Powell and one other one.
8. Bo Wolford at 6'3" and 305 will lead the O line that will be awesome should they develop a center and a tight end.

Belfry will be in the 2A state championship game and I think they will face Beechwood. If they can throw it just enough, they just might win it.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I think this group of to be seniors have yet to even play in a state championship game. How long has it been since a group went through Belfry and never even walked on the field for a state title game? From what I’ve seen, I hope they make it this year because afterwards it may be a minute.

The 1999 football class or 2000 graduating class is the last to not play in a finals.  Until last year, no BHS team had gone more than 2 years playing in the finals since the championship run of 2003 and 2004.

Appreciate the update….been very quiet on Pond Creek….and rightfully so.   Gonna be a weird vibe around the program all season.

I know that Belfry returns basically their whole team from last season. Is most of the coaching staff holdovers from Coach Haywood's staff? Will anything change in regard to the offensive or defensive systems?

Yes , picked up a new assistant as well . As far as the staff goes Coach Varney has the right pieces around his team to make a deep run in 2A ball .

That August 8th scrimmage between belfry and Raceland should be a slobber knocker
#16
^^^No it really shouldn't

Chase Varney practiced last week and played in the 7 v 7 at Perry Thursday night. He said he felt better and stronger than last year.

Belfry roster is loaded. If they can stay fairly healthy, they have an excellent chance to get to Kroger.
