Looks like he will be named the next head coach at Maryland.
Kevin Willard accepted the Villanova job, pretty much left Maryland high and dry amid some controversial comments about the athletic department, lack of support/NIL money. I guess the writing was on the wall from him to leave.
As for Buzz Williams, I seen something last week that he was trying to get his name in the hat for this job, and the job hadn't even come open yet. So, it seems to be official now, think this will be a great hire for the Terps.

Read an article earlier that his longest stay at a job was for 6 years.
Marquette for 6 years.
Virginia Tech for 5 years.
Texas A&M for 6 years.
With his track record I guess he was ready to move on and signing a 6-year deal pretty much nails it. Do you think this would be destination job for Buzz? He is a great coach but has never made it past the elite 8 in his tenure as a coach, he has definitely built programs from the ground up but has never taken his teams to that next/elite level. This will definitely be a new challenge for him, as Maryland lost their HC to Nova, and their AD to SMU.

Darn, it has to cost BUZZ a small fortune just to move his suits.

Wouldn't say he's a bad coach. Seems to do well with a chip on his shoulder. I've never understood some of the self-importance and think that there are some qualities that would be described as eccentric at best.
He was born in Texas and has some time at Marquette and Virginia Tech, but most of his experience is in the Texas region (only 12-13 years of his career are outside of that), so I'm not sure that the move from College Station to College Park is going to suit him well. Moving from an Adidas to Under Armour school, so no obvious ties there.
Wondering what Maryland's AD saw in a "does well enough as an underdog at football schools" to pass over other candidates and cut him a check.

He's an ass. Always has been. Likely always will be.

Someone with more ties to the area and/or someone with more ties to Under Armour or experience recruiting for a secondary brand.
Current VCU coach Ryan Odom is on a lot of team's lists-- he was head coach at UMBC when they upset Virginia and has a lot of experience in the area. Will Wade had a couple of stints at VCU. Byington had a huge turnaround for Vanderbilt last season and had just left James Madison. George Mason's Tony Skinn was a former assistant. Did they kick the tires on younger names like Preston Spradlin? Duane Simpkins is a former player who also played at DeMatha, but probably isn't ready for that type of role just yet.
I don't know that anything would have been terribly wrong with trying to find a fit from the pros.
Buzz Williams just seems like the person you hire if you want a sure thing and are willing to live with a relatively low ceiling. He's a step back from Willard.

That makes him even more of an ass.

Ironically enough now, Odom is the new Head Coach at Virginia.
Some of those names you mentioned were definitely worthy candidates, would've seen someone young like Tony Skinn would've faired at a job like that even tho he may not be ready just yet for that big of an upgrade. I'd seen a rumor last week that Buzz was trying to force his name into the conversation for the job, even when Willard hadn't officially left, so sounds to me that he was ready to bolt College Station.
I never had a problem with Buzz, he is a great coach that can really build a program and turn it around, but have to wonder if he will ever take that next step and make a Final 4.

Texas A&M hired Bucky McMillan. Younger coach that more schools probably wanted, and Maryland's buyout helped pay for at least a million of his salary.

Buzz is at his best rebuilding teams but really struggles to take the next step. It's why he jumps from program to program. He's never had to maintain a program. After about 5 years he gets bored and the honeymoon phase has worn off, so he jumps to the next place. It kind of reminds me of CAL. He is at his best those first 8-10 years when his whole persona is fresh, new, and exciting. By year 10 though the fan base gets tired of "I haven't seen him" and "we are made for March".
