Former NL Player Reed Shepherd Demoted to G League
#1
I wonder if Coach V will get blamed for this?
#2
Reeds has made some great accomplishments, however if you go look at my old post I’ve always said he struggles to guard a quick player one on one. He has excellent helping skills with this athleticism with his vertical but his foot speed one on one isn’t going to get it done in the NBA.

How good do you have to be to play in the nba? He isn’t shooting from 3 they way he was expected to. He is shooting 28% from three and 32% overall. The nba is so three point dependent that a lot of other skills get devalued. Reed doesn’t have that natural ability to blow by nba guys. Maybe it will come. The guy reed plays behind, van vleet, it took him 2-3 years to find his footing. Not everyone is impactful immediately like john wall, d fox, or even jamal murray. It may take him a while although i do think bring assigned to g league is surprising and alarming for his potential place in the league. Brings me no pleasure in saying. I love that kid!

(Whatever the reason for his demotion)How it it not caught before he gets drafted? Or, was the draft so weak his potential was worth the risk?

Weak draft. A lot of people are saying he should have stayed at UK and made NIL money, but he did the smart thing, he entered when he stock was highest.

Reed has never recovered from that Oakland debacle.

Everything checked out from what i heard. Lead sec and top 5 in country in steals. Second in the country in 3 point%. Really good passer, Active hands, good vertical. He is struggling to create off the dribble. That mixed in with poor shooting is why he is in the g league. I assume he is stuggling to keep guys in front of him also. I thought his shooting would keep him around. Everyone assumed shooting would be the last thing not to translate to the league.

Before I say anything else, he's a kid from London that was a lottery pick. LFG

Anyway, it was a weak draft class and if he came back to UK he ran the risk of falling to the second round or worse. Would have loved to have seen him with Pope's team, but lottery contract money is a big deal and that was basically guaranteed if he left. His contract is $10M+ per year! He reportedly made 400-500k at UK as a freshman. Easy choice for me.

The Rockets are #2 in the Western Conference right now and with a shot at the NBA Finals on the line, they don't have time to experiment with Reed in the lineup. Sending him to the G League let's him get minutes he wouldn't get otherwise. I wouldn't consider this a "demotion" as much as a "reassignment." This is an opportunity to come back ready to contribute instead of watching from the bench.

This is solely based on how hard it is to get minutes for the second best team in the west rn that is guard dominated, and he needs to develop. He wasn’t going to play on this road trip coming up, so they made the SMART decision to send him down. Oh and guess what, it’s not that he’s behind anyone else, cause he’s currently got 49/5/6 with time to play in his first G league game. He’s a pro guard, probably a career backup or starter on a bad team, but he’s a pro and will most likely get a second contract somewhere in the NBA.

If he keeps playing like he did tonight, faults or not I don't think he stays there very long . It may take him a couple seasons to settle into his role as a NBA player.

I said two years ago that once he got out of that hellhole of a place called Laurel County, I would be a fan wherever he played. I'll always root for Reed.

Well Reed sure showed up & showed out in his G league debut, scored 49 points.

Hopefully he can find hos footing in this league and develop into a great player, he had to strike while the iron was hot, this last draft class was pretty weak compared to those the last few years. This years draft class, he probably wouldn't have a chance of being a top 5 pick, or even lottery pick for that matter.

No denying this kids work ethic, hope he can continue to develop.

Adrian Smith, another Ky. kid had a nice NBA career, with only a fraction of the talent of Reed. Reed will will have a nice NBA Career also.
#14
Kid can play and basketball it is through the roof. Cant blame him for making the right choice but would have loved him to play for Pope. He will be back with the big team soon

That didn't last long. After three successful games with the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Vipers, Houston's developmental
affiliate club in the NBA G League, rookie guard Reed Sheppard was recalled to the Rockets on Sunday.
