Thank you for sharing @GeorgeLopez1234

Knew it would be this weekend, but didn't have a schedule of the games. Looks to be some really good ones going on.

They don’t stream it because this is a major fundraiser for Martin county athletics

Didn't they stream it last year?

I remember seeing highlights from the D&D Facebookook page of the Lyon Co-Great Crossing game.

Darryl will sit up there and film clips during the game but doesn’t steam the game. Same way he got highlights from over to JC last weekend.

Ohh ok, gotcha. I just remembered seeing a highlight package of that game put together but didn't know if it was edited from a stream or not. I know you aren't allowed to stream at Lawrence Co at all. That is a delicate subject, I'm sure most schools don't want to allow it due to taking away from fan attendance, and of course money at the gate, and also there's the fact that it's become tough to afford to go to these games.

D&D is going to do MC games during the regular season though. I’m a firm believer in if people really want to watch a certain team during the season, then 95% of them are going to watch them in person instead of online. Live streaming doesn’t really have a major impact on attendance.

Should be $10 for all day

Shelby Valley 66 Chapmanville 65 in the first varsity action of the day. Caden Johnson hit a deep contested 3 at the buzzer for SV.

Anyone attended that can comment on the Ashland and the Boyd County games?

Ashland beat Breathitt by 20 (without Cam Davis injured, and Jennings who is at Arizona on football visit)

Carter played really well and is as good as anyone in state. He guarded Sperry all night and done a nice job on him.

Adair beat Boyd by five.   Spurlock didn’t shoot three really well but scored several times in mid range.   Neither team got many stops. I thought Hicks played well.

I thought Ashland looked very good. I really like the way Zander Carter plays the game. Boyd not so good. Spurlock forced a lot of bad shots.

Shelby Valley 66 Chapmanville 65
Gavin Hamilton runs the show for SV. Handles the primary ball handling duties, and runs the offense every time down the court. Caden Johnson has taken a step this off season, looks primed to lead the Wildcats in scoring, and when they need a bucket I would be surprised if they didn’t get the ball to Johnson. He hit a deep contested 3 at the buzzer to win this one for SV. Brady Johnson looked good, still getting into “basketball shape” having missed all of last season and just stepping off the grid-iron, but didn’t seem to miss a beat. Smooth jumper, makes the right play, and a big and strong enough kid to battle for rebounds even though his natural position is probably a SF. Jonah Bartley brings the juice, and when he’s hot is one of the best shooters in the region. Always makes the right play and he is a strong defender as well. Logan Johnson is SV’s best rebounder and only interior presence. He did well battling against the Chapmanville bigs who had 3-4” on him at least. Wee-Man Justice appears to be the 6th man, and he is the quickest player on the team, a “in-your-face” on ball defender. Can shoot the 3 and has one of the best running floaters I’ve seen. Dalton Gillespie and Luke Collins also saw spot minutes for the Wildcats. All in all, Shelby Valley looks like a different team this year. They have to learn to win, as I’ve seen them twice this year and both times they’ve given up huge leads, but they pulled this one out which is a step in the right direction.

Ashland 81 Breathitt County 60
Zander Carter is as good as advertised. Doesn’t force anything, and still effortlessly puts up big numbers. He does quite literally everything well. Love the way he talks to his team the whole game, seems to be the type of leader you want for your team. He’s the best player I have seen at this point this season. Ashland isn’t only Carter though, #5 Preston Hoskins was very impressive, as well as several others whose names I don’t know. Granted, I haven’t seen most teams yet, but Ashland has to be a top 5 team in the state at this point. Breathitt was relatively competitive for most of the game, but Ashland’s athleticism and shooting eventually broke them. Austin Sperry flashes and makes Breathitt go. He’s a great player, and gets to the rim with ease. I think they should run more action for him, especially against good teams, rather than having him create his own all game.

Newport 57 Hazard 50
No Evan Eversole for Hazard, no James Turner for Newport. Chippy game. Newport jumped out to a 10-0 run. It seemed like Hazard was stumped by Newports athleticism out the gate, but then Hazard settled in. Newport had good size. Griffin Starks and Amontae Lowe are good players for them. With no Eversole, Seth Caudill and Daulton Combs felt like 95% of Hazard’s offense. Hazard cut it to 3-4 a couple times, but never got over the hump.

Adair Co 83 Boyd Co 78
Biggest surprise of the day for me just because I did not know anything about Adair County coming in, but those boys are legit. #14 for Adair County, Connor Loy, was arguably the 2nd best player on the day. He battled with Jacob Spurlock on the defensive end all game, and was Adair’s leading scorer. Adair only had 1 “big”, #5 Isaiah Cochran, who is actually more of a stretch 4 because he can shoot the 3 and get the other teams big out of the paint and beat them off the bounce. Boyd County was good as well. I’m sure they feel like they should’ve won as they led at the half and most of the 2nd half before it slipped away. I thought Spurlock looked more physical this year. Boyd was giving it to him in the post when they thought he had a favorable matchup in there and he was able to elevate and shoot over them. Rhett Holbrooke is a great athlete and he didn’t look the slightest bit rusty from football. Hicks still runs the show very well for Boyd and made several plays, and Jackson Childers is a good inside presence and can shoot the mid-range jumper. Clark Huff hit a couple shots, including a big 3 late for Boyd. They will be right in the thick of it, no doubt.

Lyon Co 79 Harlan Co 71
Maddux Huff started the game out on fire. Hit a few 3s, and a couple pull up jumpers. He cooled off a bit in the 2nd half, but you probably have to give some credit to Lyon for that, as they probably saw their best plan of action was to make someone else beat them. Harlan County is going to need a lot of scoring from Huff, which he is capable of, for them to win big games this year. Reggie Cottrell looks good attacking the basket, he didn’t shoot a lot from the outside in this one. He’s a plus athlete, with long arms, and has great energy, which makes him a menace on defense. For Lyon County, Nolan Coffman and Brady Kirk looked to me to be their top guys. Coffman has a good looking jumper and can create his own shot. Brady Kirk is a good athlete and was having success attacking the basket, especially as the game went on.

George Washington 78 Johnson Central 44
George Washington was good. They had 3 players in sweats who passed the eye test for them as well. Noah Lewis, a 2026 kid, was a monster for GW in this one. Several highlight dunks and blocks. I was surprised by how Johnson Central looked though. They could not get into their offense as George Washington’s ball pressure was giving them major trouble. Their best offense was giving it to Austin Slone and letting him attack the basket, which he is excellent at and does relentlessly. Brayden Shepherd hit a couple 3s but that was JC’s only offense. JC held up defensively in the 1st half, but they wore out in the 2nd half. I will need to see them against local competition to get a better gauge on them because they left a lot to be desired Saturday.

Martin County 97 Tug Valley 93
Martin County does not appear to have taken a step back at all. Parker Watts had 20+ at halftime, not sure how many he ended up with but I would guess close to 30. Bryson Dials led all scorers with 34 and it felt like an effortless 34. Both Watts and Dials have silky smooth shots and good length, ball handling, and quickness so they can get to the rim at ease. Peyton Davis is a better shooter than I realized, he hit a couple big shots right when Tug Valley would get too close for comfort. He’s also Martin County’s best defender and brings the juice for them. Devin Maynard is a brute, but moves very well and can handle the ball like a SF. He will give opposing big men fits stretching then out by hitting a 3 then blowing by them next possession. Martin County’s #0 Brayden Estep and #3 Eli Mills are good pieces as well. Right when Tug Valley cut it to a 2 or 3 point game in the 4th quarter, Mills caught a hand off pass and drilled a 3 ball for his first points of the game stretching it back out for Martin. Farris and #35 are both good players for Tug Valley, but #23 (maybe #32, my memory is failing me) hit a couple big 3s and #20 made plays for them all game as well.

Great recap! I also may have just discovered one of the most unique nicknames of all time: Wee-Man. Best name in the 15th Region since Hobo McCoy.
