They were the best team in KY and a top 15 team in the country. Anything can happen on a given night in sports but this was an outlier. Boyle would still beat anyone in the state in a best of five series.Woulds,Coulda,Shoulda are all excuses. Cov Catholic went to Boyle and won. Boyle County was obviously not the 15th best team in the country.
Boyle seems to be better in your mind than they actually were. They had a terrible run defense that multiple teams were able to exploit and they had one player who saved them when things tough. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to like he had in previous games last night.
I'm a very unstable genius. In my very unstable, genius mind, Boyle was the best team in KY and would beat the Catholics like a rented mule if they played again. 49-14 Boyle if they played again next week. This game was a fluke. Flukes happen.
Well you’d have to somehow get your run defense to go from bad to decent to do that and that’s not happening. Flukes happen to every team to ever exist. DuPont fans are saying the same thing you’re saying, pikeville fans are saying the same thing you’re saying and so on. Boyle was the best team in Kentucky because of what they could do on offesne. The defense was not close to being the best defense in Kentucky.

I'll entertain this. Who do you think has the best defense in Kentucky? There is only a few teams that would stand a chance at beating Boyle County. Some in 6A and Some in 4A and a few in 5A. Now, out of the teams in your mind. Since Boyle County is not that good on defense, which team has the defense we should crown the king? Im not talking about getting on the KHSAA website and looking of a team who has a weak schedule and can make it look good on stats, Im talking about who out of Trinity, Frederick Douglass, ST X, Male, Ryle, DuPont Manual, Cooper, Bowling Green, South Warren, Highlands, Corbin, Franklin County, Paducah Tilghman, Covington Catholic has that defense? I want to look at the best defense in Kentucky.

Now I know games are not won on paper, but when you look at the facts that Cal Preps does, they take into consideration what is on paper and it changes as the season goes along. So you have to look at the fact that what's on paper is Boyle is still the top team stat wise. The other teams they already have played and beaten but this puts into consideration if they played like normal then this would be a possible outcome.
Like I said in another post, its real easy to call Boyle a weak team on defense and Covington Catholic the better team after a loss, but if I was in Vegas, Id took Boyle 100 out of 100 times. Fact. Any given night is real for a reason. It can happen any given night.

I'll add my .02 and then I will get out because I can already tell which direction this post is headed-
First, to Boyle, congratulations you had a great season and have nothing to hang your head about. Congrats to all the players, you made memories that you will never forget. Going up to Cleveland and getting that win is truly special. It really sucks that the RPI punishes a team for taking that leap.
Boyle runs a great program that is building a great tradition. That tradition will continue to reap rewards for years to come.
Winning a state title takes all aspects coming together, it takes a great coach, great assistants, great players, a strong belief in your abilities, and a great gameplan to beat another good team. On any given night if just one of those pieces falters, another good team will find that weak link.
Bull, you made some good points on the "odds" as they appear, but Friday was proof that doesn't always play out.
If it seems some fans are a little happy they lost, take that with a grain of salt as everyone in the rest of the state has heard repeatedly all year that they don't belong on the same field as Boyle and would be a 40 point underdog. There were people from other teams bragging about how they were going to get whipped by Boyle? I could never for the life of me figure that one?
When I was at Tilghman in the late 80's if Coach Allan Cox had told us we were playing the Chiefs on Friday night we would have said "Bring it on"
I hope PT takes the crown, I believe we had just as good a shot against Boyle as anyone, but we won't see that this year.
But as I have repeatedly said, the road to the title is one step at a time. Tilghman has to focus on Corbin this week, and Franklin has to focus on Covington Catholic. There are no patsies left, all four teams left in 4A have proven they are title contenders. Anyone that believes otherwise is likely to find their season over.
.
It sucks that Boyles' season came down to one play, but often that is the determining factor when you get close to the finals as everyone is capable.
Again congrats to Boyle and a fine season, they have a great program and I am sure they will remain in the hunt.

Even if they had scored, they would have had to stop CCH. They couldn't stop CCH after the turnover with 2 minutes to go in the game and a chance to get the ball back. CCH broke off another long run and QB slid down at about the 14 yd line when he could have walked into the endzone for another TD. Then CCH kneeled down inside the 5 yard line to kill the clock.

Boyle lost maybe their best linebacker Jax Crowe to a season ending injury in the first round of the playoff's and when Brown got hurt early in the game that hurt us in multiple ways on both sides of the ball at multiple positions, not making excuses but we were really handicapped on the edges.

Also, where they battling any injuries the past few weeks. It just seems like a tank that ran out of gas. A subpar performance against LCC (they were better than most give them, and yes I know the final score), and then tonight. Just trying to make sense of it all. Regardless, this class has won more rings than 99.5% ever will. That’s a feat.
I'm with you, this just doesn't make any sense to me, at all. I had this as a running clock by halftime or early third quarter. CC had less than 140 yds last week against the worst defense in the history of organized football, at any level. How does CC amass 400 yards against Boyle, whose defense looked stellar against a nationally ranked Ohio team ? Something is amiss here.

IAM 22,
That’s where I mentioned having that gameplan as one of the pieces.
CC looked outside the box and came up with a new scheme to capitalize on an opening.
Another “piece of the puzzle “ I should have mentioned is the health of your players.

As I was breaking down the film and just looking inside the game for myself, I can see that Covington Catholics QB is a elusive runner. I talk alot of football throughout the year with parents and just fans of the game. We talk about alot of teams and the question always gets asked to me, what do I think about some stuff. Well, I like simple offenses and to be good at them. I am not a fan of a team who gets blown out but can put 30 looks on a field and can run many sets but cant gain 1 yard unless they get lucky and catch the defense asleep. I like when a team comes out of the gate and shows the team identity immediately and says by playoffs, this is what we do, stop it. Belfry, Johnson Central comes to mind. Beechwood. They have unique offenses some years to where they don't change. Well, Covington Catholic kept it simple by the looks of it. But stopping it wasn't simple. To watch these lineman block and the runs is amazing and it being on Boyle County. Because unlike some who just want to step on the head while its down, to see 1 team get some success on that defense is unreal. But like Jack just said, you lose starters and you got 2 out of the game, you think it don't make a big difference. It sure does. But game planning in these playoffs is the difference in moving on and getting blown out. CC was on top of clock management. There is a reason Eddie Eviston has rings himself. He is a good coach. I think this game shows alot about what Covington Catholic did in the offseason, regrouped, and stayed focused. Stayed with a gameplan and executed. You also see in the film, what I call the stuff you cant see on stats and thats effort. Covington Catholic was playing hard. You can see it in the film. Now that is not a jab at Boyle, they was the little giant all year with the target on there back. They always play hard. But after watching what I have looked at so far, CC looks like they came to the fight and wasn't taking no for a outcome. Lots of stuff happened in this game. Injuries, Penalties, Turnovers was a huge part of this game. When you tally it all up. it was a dang good ballgame to watch honestly. Harney, Cash 28 rushes for 234 yards and 3 for 4 Passing for 104 Yards 3 Touchdowns...

Even the Pope would be forced to admit that,if there was a repeat matchup between Boyle and Catholic. the Covington lads would get abused like alter boys in the next meeting. Boyle is way better. Accidents happen. Friday was an unfortunate accident.
