Somerset 42 Breathitt County 21
#1
Final from the Briar Patch on homecoming.  Somerset led 14-0 at the half, and 42-14 before giving up a late score on a long pass play. They also turned it over twice on fumbles. One was on the goal line and recovered in the end zone by the Bobcats for a touchback.  Some things to continue to work on for Somerset, but overall solid effort.  Breathitt didn't get completely blown out, but they never really threatened Somerset either.

On a side note: That was the smallest Breathitt County team, numbers wise that I can remember.  Do they just have a few small classes or something?

Will Breathitt and Leslie be a war?

I think Breathitt will beat Leslie by at least 2 scores Breathitt does run the ball pretty good and if they have time the QB can throw it. The problem he had last night was Somerset Defense was in the back field and had him scrambling most of the night. This was the same score as last season game. Somerset has got better each week now their line is gelling giving Hughes what he needs. Also cimala has developed as another consistent threat along with Bruner reading and pulling the ball taking some of the pressure off Hughes makes their offense formidable. This is not official but lake Cumberland had Hughes withe 247 yards on 22 Carries last night. He pretty much ran all over the cats last night.

How is Breathitt districted in the new alignment?

Would they be better off to play: Magoffin, Powell, Estill, Hazard, Clay, Paintsville, Prestonsburg; their district games and be content with an 8-4; second round playoff exit type season?

Yep! Breathitt used to be in a district with Leslie, Clay, Johnson Central, and Knott Central as best as I can remember.

Whitaker had Breathitt’s number as a QB and a coach for many years! Clay was usually highly competitive- Sean Pennington and D. Henson years. JC were big and physical, but Breathitt usuallly handled them and KCC.

I think next year Breathitt will be back on top I saw the new district alignment and you couldn’t take an all star team from the other teams in the district and be competitive. Playing zero competition in the East cake walk to the semifinals beechwood Breathitt and belfry in the East. OC mayfield LCA Somerset in the west 2A gonna be stacked.

That link that rooster posted of the highlight video of the game is awesome really good work.

Who is in Breathitt’s new district?

Breathitt will be in a district with Jackson County, Morgan County and West Carter.

Somerset will be in a district with Clinton County, Green County. Metcalfe County and Monroe County.

Well, YES, of course BREATHITT will be on top of that ANT HILL!! Are Big M little organ and Jackson Co going to even compete in a district in 2025?

That’s what I am saying success by attrition they will be going into the playoff’s 8-2,9-1,or 10-0 depending on how stiff they want to make their non district schedule and the Hype machine will be in overdrive. I think Breathitt co best football days are in the rear view mirror the school and the area keep loosing population and their feeder program is not very good. I think they will continue to struggle against quality competition, but their district next year they will be champs for the foreseeable future until they redistrict.

Just for fun I’m going to say Leslie Co. wins that matchup with their passing game. I feel like they want it more and will fight harder for it. Breathitt’s QB does not do well under pressure, which is to be expected as a freshman. But I do want to add that when he threw an interception to Somerset’s big lineman Koger, the freshman QB was the only player that I can recall that chased him down and tried with everything in him to prevent that touchdown from happening. He’s got a good arm on him and I look forward to seeing how he does going forward.

Also, the star player that everyone was talking about that’s back is a good athlete when things are going right for breathitt, but I noticed him shutting down quickly against the Jumpers when faced with overcoming adversity. Hughes intercepted a ball thrown to him and he made zero effort to even go after him. Also noticed him shutting down when he saw Cimala coming at him or when Cimala had the ball headed his direction. Zero effort to tackle him.

I’ll be tuned in to see how the Breathitt and Leslie game plays out. Should be a good matchup.

I went back and watched the game. Felt like Breathitt done well rushing the football, but they consistently hurt themselves every time they dropped back to pass. Freshman QB is gonna be good, but I think a little too much is being asked of him right now. Game should’ve been closer, but Breathitt couldn’t finish drives and had too many turnovers to give themselves a chance.

It could have been closer, sure.  But it also could have been a running clock. Somerset fumbled into the end zone once, when they were going in for a score.  They also lost a fumble in Breathitt territory when they were driving in the second half.  They also stopped themselves on 2 other drives with a personal foul and a shotgun snap that rolled past the quarterback for a 20 yard loss.  If they convert any of those drives, they go up 35 points in the 4th quarter and it becomes a running clock.  Breathitt County has some nice players on offense, but their defense is pretty bad.  They did okay the first couple of drives against the run, when they sold out and stacked the box.  That caused them to get gashed by the passing game though.  Once they tried to play it more straight up, they couldn't stop either.

Somerset does a nice job attacking the seams and the middle of the field out of play action and RPO. Very tough to defend when you have a really good ground game.

@Walt Longmire I remember thinking during the game that if they (breathitt) would’ve/could’ve capitalized on the chances they had handed to then Somerset would’ve been in trouble.

@BlackcatAlum the young QB is going to struggle some. It’s to be expected but still is mentally hard on the player himself. I think he will be good as he matures in that position - there’s a big difference from middle school to high school play. It’ll be imperative for his line to protect him in order for him to build the confidence he needs for that position. I would imagine it’s hands down one of the most stressful jobs on the field and carrying that load is going to require some help up front. A few years back Somerset had to put Hughes in at QB as a freshman when Bruner was injured. He’s a junior now - but at the time I feel like they used him in that spot in ways they knew he could handle and make it work. He wasn’t a QB but could throw a good ball so they passed some and ran him or handed off most plays to get by until Bruner was back. I think Breathitt may need to adjust how they’re using him until he gets his foundation steady for high school. He will get there.

I’m not sure why Kyle didn’t run ball more and had no play action to keep Lb at home Somerset  not only team bring pressure on Breathitt. I feel like you guys one had most success. Your D line is athletic Breathitt ran and had starting tackle out They to many deep routes with no outlet throws. Kept backs in all night block try run stuff takes to long get open. They had success on hitches but just no one was open. Then had some deep balls late when they gave time throw. But Lesile co don’t have that kind athletes to put pressure QB if they do it be man to man. I think get burnt. Somerset had best secondary I had seen and great game plan and Breathitt made no adjustments. Qb got sacked more one game than I believe had all year.

The freshman quarterback really took a beating, but he hung in there well, and kept getting back up.  He throws a nice ball and will be a good one if he keeps developing.  Even though the game was out of reach in the 4th he didn't quit and made 2 really nice throws to give Breathitt 2 scores.  It would have been easy to pack it in and get the clock ran, but he hung in there.

You could tell he was gunshy in this game. He took a nasty hit on a sack from number 11 Austin lawless that caused him to be slow getting up. Everyone talks about Breathitt having good young talent what about Somerset, majority of their team is sophomore and juniors with a incredible 8th grade class coming in next year. Somerset gonna be really good going forward. Most people within the program believed this season would be possibly a little bit of a down year compared to what is coming even though I believe they can make a run to the semifinals again this year if they don’t have any injuries and keep playing good.
