It began 100 years ago, in 1923, with a loss to Pineville 142-0. In that inaugural season of Corbin Redhound football the Hounds won but two games(thank you , Barbourville and Barbourville Baptist) , while losing five . In those five losses, Corbin was outscored 413-0.
Since there have been a lot of games and a lot of winning. Corbin has played a total of 1,111 games in its 100 year history, winning 757 of them and tying 34. That's nearly a .700 winning percentage, after a rough start.
Along the way there have been three state titles(1976,1980, and 1982) and two mythical state titles(1939 and 1955), along with several runner-up trophies. There have been 22 head coaches in those 100 years.
There have been many memorable games at old Campbell Field over the past century. I attended my first one with my papaw exactly 50 years ago, in 1973. It was a 42-8 first round playoff loss to Boyd County. Since then, I've been to well over 200 games at Campbell Field. Tomorrow night will as memorable as any one of them as old Campbell Field reveals her new face for the first time. It will will be the largest crowd to ever witness a football game, with folks from all over the state headed to Corbin. I'm told there are folks coming from different parts of the country to see the new look Campbell Field get her christening.
Oh, and it doesn't hurt that it has the potential to be one helluva football game. It matches the #1 and #2 teams in the state according the Cantrell ratings , #3 and #4 according to KSR, #1 and #8 according to Max Preps. Football in Corbin has never been just about Friday nights. It's part of the fabric of the community. This Friday night, however will be something different. This Friday will be quite the spectacle. Something old, something new. Old Campbell Field passes the torch to a new era --- the old grass is gone, the new turf is in place. The tradition remains.... I'll see you there tomorrow night !!!
This is a musical and pictorial tribute to my Hounds downs through the years. I'll make several posts between now and tomorrow night. ENJOY!!!!

Corbin's physical line play dominated both sides of the ball as the Redhounds downed Glasgow 18-6 to win the 1982 KHSAA Class AA state championship. Steve Rawlings and Tommy Greer tallied touchdowns for Corbin and the CHS defense held Glasgow to only 59 rush yards. The Redhounds finished 8-4 on the season after surviving a brutal regular season schedule that saw them face 11-2 Bryan Station, 11-3 Glasgow, 8-4 Danville, 9-2 Cawood, 9-1 Madison Central, 10-1 Somerset, and 9-2 Middlesboro.

Kenny Gilbert's leaping grab of a Tom Horvath pass from 29 yards away accounted for the only score in Corbin's 6-0 victory over Mayfield in the 1976 Class AA state championship game. The dominant Redhound defense limited a powerful Mayfield attack to only 132 yards as CHS claimed their first state title under the KHSAA playoff system. The Cardinals were invincible according to manypundits, some which had Mayfield favored by multiple TDs. Mayfield was averaging well over 40 points a game. Corbin's defense, led by Corbin's original Grizzley Bear, R.C. Thomas shut out the high-powered Cardinals at at a bitter cold Commonwealth Stadium the day after Thanksgiving. It was one of the best days and nights of my life.

The 1977 Hounds were one of the best teams I saw in my playing days and IMO, should have won back to back that year but lost by 1 in the Finals to Mayfield.
The hallmark of each of those Corbin teams from that era (1976-1982) was in the trenches. Strong, strong line play on both sides of the ball.

Example being past four seasons of Redhound Teams better. Just not been able to put it together. I’ve watched all the Redhound Teams. Past 10 years have had best teams in Corbin history.

Legendary Coach, Archie Powers leads his Redhounds on to Commonwealth Stadium in the '76 title game against heavily-favoed Mayfield . Corbin shut out the high-powered offense of the Cards 6-0 for its first title under the new KHSAA system. Powers would lead the Hounds to a runner-up season in '77, falling just inches short at the goal line in a two-point conversion and losing to Mayfield 14-13 at EKU. Powers' Hounds would win another title in '80, upsetting heavily-favored Ft. Campbell 16-7. After the win, the players decided to hoist Coach Powers upon their shoulders but they slipped in the process and dropped him. In the post-game interview, Powers said something to the effect of, “Well we fumbled the ball all year and they fumbled the old coach.”

'82 State Championship coach , Larry "Cotton" Adams with one of his players- a young man by the name of Steve Jewell, who would go on to lead the Hounds as head coach years later.

Back in 2001, Corbin Redhound historian, Bill Crook selected these 10 Corbin teams as the best ever. Personally, I would rate the '77 team higher than tenth. They were best team I ever saw that didn't win a state championship. Came up inches short on a two-point conversion. Ronnie Watkins had run over Mayfield like a wild man all day. I think Coach powers felt like Mayfield was expecting the ball to go to Watkins. Instead , freshman Roy Taylor got the ball and came up inches short.
1. 1955 State Champions under Coach Bill Tucker, 11-0-0 with great players and even greater chemistry.
2. 1939 Redhounds undefeated squad under Coach Ted Meadors, Jimmy Cummins, Rusty Peace, Bitsy Holman, Bobby Coleman and company.
3. 1976 State AA Champions under Coach Archie Powers beat a great Mayfield team for the championship on a touchdown catch by Kenny Gilbert. Tom Horvath, Roger Jones, Burly Foley, Steve Baird… they were a tough lot.
4. 1935 Redhounds were led by Alfred Keck and Sam Brasel, two great tackles, and Coach Nick Denes. Keck once blocked five punts in a game against archrival Middlesboro.
5. The 1980 Class AA State Champions, once again under Coach Archie Powers, downed Fort Campbell in the final, breaking a 16-game winning streak for the Falcons.
6. The 1982 Redhounds under Coach Larry “Cotton” Adams made a terrific championship run to win the AA title, sparked by a great come-from-behind win over Middlesboro.
7. 1957 Redhounds of Coach Walt Green featured one of the all-time great Redhounds in Mel Chandler, and an outstanding running back in Harold Queary. This team went unbeaten until an ill-fated trip to Louisville to play St. Xavier.
8. The once beaten Redhounds of 1981 led by Greg Taylor, Steve Jewell and company under Coach Archie Powers were outstanding, but fell short to the Yellow Jackets of Middlesboro.
9. 1960 Redhounds were the last undefeated squad, coached by Walt Green and featuring Rodger Bird, Barry Brooks and Jesse Grant.
10. The 1977 State AA runners up under Coach Archie Powers came up six inches short of back-to-back state championships, losing to Mayfield, 14-13.
1977 Hounds ---came up just inches short. They just "COULDN'T GET IT RIGHT" on that last play !!!

Peaked at #3 on the pop charts in 1977. The Redhounds peaked at #2 that year. They just "Couldn't get it right" on that last play at the goal line.
REDHOUND... COLONEL ... LEGEND
Coach Roy Kidd passed away earlier this week. He was a Corbin native, a three-sport athlete at Corbin High, named All-State QB for the 1949 season. He went on to EKU, where he had a standout career as a record-setting quarterback. The, of course, he went on to become one of the most successful coaches in college football history, leading the Colonels to two National Championships. He had more than 300 wins as a college head coach. RIP Coach !!! #4everRedhound

Coach Kidd was a hero to so many young men. Not only was he a hero to many in Corbin but to all the young men who passed his way from all over the country. I know he made many trips on Saturday afternoons back in the 40's to watch Roy Rogers on the silver screen at Corbin's Hippodrome Theater .

Will Frederick Douglass be the best team to ever come into Campbell Field and leave with a loss? I don't know but there have been a lot of really good team that have fallen victim to the Campbell Field curse. Two that come to mind is Dupont Manuel in 1960 and Highlands in 1962.
Dupont Manuel was a powerhouse back in the day so beating them in 1960 and putting 46 points on them was big. But the 10-0 win over Highlands in '62 was probably the best team to come to Campbell and leave with a "L". Highlands was the two-time defending state champ and hadn't lost a game in over 3 years until they left Campbell Field with a shutout loss. They had a 34 game winning streak before being toppled in the state semi-final game at Campbell. The win over the powerhouse Bluebirds sent shock waves all across the state. The Hounds lost the state title game to Danville the next week, 13-7.
Interesting story about the win over Manuel. Coach Walt Green was the coach at the time. He was talking to his team in the locker room before the game when someone came in and handed coach a note. Green read it and appeared shaken. He dropped the note and immediately hurried out of the locker room without saying a word. Someone picked up the note, read it , and announced to the team that Coach Green's mother had passed away. Coach Green would not be on the sidelines for the Hounds that day in the biggest game of the year against the Louisville power.
The Hounds, motivated to win the big game for their coach, put a hurting on the highly regarded Manuel team 46-34. The thing is, however, Coach Green was there that day, not on the sidelines, but up in the press box. You see, he had contrived the whole story in order to motivate his kids. His mother had not died. It was all a ruse. And it worked. The Corbin kids knocked of Manuel , completing the 1960 season undefeated and untied at 11-0.
Will there be more magic at old/new Campbell tonight?

Folks, it just means something extra special here. This community---the place where I was born and raised, and where I still live, is different. Some of that "different" is not so good. And some of it is. Football in this community is more than just a Friday night. It is a way of life. It ties the community together in times in trouble and strife. People in this community lives, dies, sleeps, and breathes Corbin high school football. And it shows on the faces of kids like Brody Wells after an emotional game.
Look , I've been as critical as anyone of people like Cox and Greer and the RVC . But, at the end of the day, we are all Corbin football fans. We're ONE.... we're CORBIN. There is no other place quite like it, for both good and bad reasons. Old School Hound is all Corbin. I don't sleep with the enemy. I want Tommy Greer to be successful because it means my Redhounds are winning. I'll continue to be critical when criticism is warranted but I'm not gonna quit rooting for these Hounds. I believe they can do things that others doubt. That's why I believe they can do what Boyle couldn't come close to last year.
Boyle is not us. WE ARE CORBIN !!! And that's all we need to be.

I see red, when you're in danger
And I see blue, when you are crying
All the pictures I believe
You are no stranger
You are no stranger
We have eyes like twins
Where your last thought ends my next begins always
Just one heartbeat away
From everything I mean to say oh
Catch me I'm falling like you
Wish for me I'll come running to save you
Touch me I'm calling for you
Remember me, I will never betray you
We have eyes like twins

That ‘62 HHS team interests me. Their last loss would have been in the 59 title game.

The first time I had ever heard of Corbin was in 1982. As you entered the city limits to Prestonsburg there was a huge sign that said, " Go Blackcats Beat Corbin". That season they met in the semifinals of the playoffs. Well, I had no idea who Corbin was or where they were located. Anyway I do like Corbin for different reasons now. I love that the greatest coach of all-time, Roy Kidd, is from there and played there. I like their school colors and uniforms because they look a lot like Ohio State's colors and uniforms, and it don't get much better than that. I love their mascot, the Redhounds. It's very original. They also have had a rich tradition, but they do desperately need another state title. It's been way too long since their last.
