Dude, really? This is why people look down at Russell. I am a graduate of RHS and I have enough problems telling people I am from there and them going, "Oh..." or this and that, and it's because of responses like these. Dude didn't do anything to you, lay off.

I played football at Russell, love the coaches at Russell and I do care about the school but let me tell you something right now -- East and West Carter have put out some extremely high-level athletes and it is because of the people in those communities grinding and understanding the importance of success academically and athletically.

I have a great respect for Russell's tradition academically and athletically, but folks like you ruin it for the rest of us who do care and appreciate about the quality of football being played, the gains being made, and most importantly, the obstacles some of these kids have to climb in these communities outside of the little bubble most see in Russell and Flatwoods.

I live in the Kenwood subdivision. The poverty level is four percent, which is amazing. To my southeast in Bellefonte, it's less than one percent. Much of Carter County has between a 25 to 40 percent poverty rate and it is a struggle for some of these kids to even have the support to make it to practice or even have a good, hot meal at home, let alone bust it out there for four quarters on game day. They have more worries than the average Russell kid and that is just a fact, and that's me admitting it, being one of those average Russell kids.

Point is, the Russell boosters are amazing and I was so blessed to have their support in high school as were my teammates. Considering the resources and funding that the Red Devils have, we should be beating Carter County teams and it really shouldn't be competitive, so the fact that they are not only making it competitive, but the fact that East and West are having greater postseason success by making it to the state semis in back-to-back seasons tells me they have progressed enormously through hard work and dedication.

Why knock that? And no, the schools aren't failing -- they've actually had some of their best academic successes within the last five to seven years.

Russell folks like yourself need to quit worrying about other programs (Raceland fans are extremely guilty of this too). I know that as an alum, we need the Red Devils back into the success of 2002 to 2006 when we went to five consecutive state semifinal appearances with two straight state championship game appearances and a title.

Until we get back to that, there should not be any talking about what any other program is doing. I'm not saying that five state semi appearances in five years or you're out should be the expectation, but folks at Russell need to band together and help T.J. and his staff build this thing to get it back to where it needs to be.

It’s becoming apparent East Carter is going to destroy West Carter this year, no matter whether their players drive Mercedes to the game after eating Melini Cucina or walk hungry on dirt roads to the game after not eating for days. I think it’s great that both programs have come up with competent coaches who have made them respectable the past few years. West must be down this season, though. It’s hard to keep any program going, particularly when you aren’t a school that gets transfers. It speaks volumes that these programs have lifted their status enough in recent times to have 2 Russell fans arguing over their prospects.

Congratulations to Fleming, though. I doubt they are financially advantaged.

No nerve struck, just stating facts that Raceland will dominate Russell and East Carter struggles to beat West. West Carter is 28-1 against Russell and you should have been beating West Carter. GOREDEVILS You may not have noticed the players (All age levels too) bailing on the Russell program for Raceland and other teams and it’s only gonna get worse. IMO as the season goes on you will fade away from posting anything realizing Russell is no longer one of the top teams around and tonight Raceland begins the era of domination against you and what will really sting is when you get that loss from Greenup County but at least you can say you are 29-1 or 28-2 against West Carter when the season is over. IMO you seem like a person with the attitude “If you can’t beat them, might as well join them”  so might as well get your orange and black out. In all seriousness good luck to you and Russell.

Russell is a lot better than most might think at this point. Game 1 for Russell was a debacle from fumbling the opening kickoff to fumbling the last snap from center. Russell has a very strong line and a couple of players that cannot be blocked with one person.

All kidding aside, your points are true, except nobody on Fleming comes on here and puffs their chest out about how they dominate their opponent. 

I just hear a lot of noise out of Russell about how much better they think they are than other school systems and get tired of that because it’s not necessarily as enhanced as Russell people make it out to be, like towers that can’t be touched. There are great and not so great people in every school system and Russell has both just like anybody else.

Only noticeable difference I see at Russell is there’s a greater commitment to teacher’s salaries over the rest of the region which is great and I support that 100 percent. Girls soccer is fantastic at Russell year in and year out, as is tennis.

It is also a great school system in terms of education, nobody denies that and that is because of the teacher’s salaries as well as the area. 

I just know that East and West have overachieved in a lot of areas and deserve more respect for it from folks in Russell. Don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.

I have no problem with the outcome you all predicted. It’s your all’s opinion. I didn’t say anything about the Battle of the Barrel. I hope it’s a great game, both coaching staffs are the best in the area, but I’d pick East for sure based on scoring outcomes over the first two weeks and depth.

I’m pretty sure we agree on all counts. I love seeing all area schools do well. The rising tide lifts all boats. I think high school sports in northeastern Kentucky are better than they’ve ever been. Over the last decade, there have been quite a few teams and individuals in all sports, boys and girls, that have made it a long way in state competition and have proven that our area has the ability to compete with anyone.

I agree 100 percent with you, you are absolutely right. It has been so much fun seeing the various success across all sports. Over the last eight years especially, it's really picked up a ton. I've greatly enjoyed seeing it, I've really enjoyed seeing more kids have the opportunity to play sports at the collegiate level and I have enjoyed what I have felt is a more competitive region overall like you said as it hasn't been the same two or three teams controlling the proceedings. I love parody because it makes the competition within the region better. It's led to better performances statewide which has been very thrilling.

Seeing kids go on to play in college in their sport is great. As much as I dislike Ashland ,I still want all area kids individually to be able to play in college.
