I stopped at a friends house last night. They told me that they have to pay $100 dollars for their basketball shoes and a gym bag because his son is playing football and not just basketball. The boys that are playing basketball only doesnt have to pay for them. Does anyone else think this just just wrong?

If this is true I can't say that I am surprised. It sounds like a lot of the basketball coaches I have been around in my days. I don't know why basketball coaches especially want to hold it against a kid for playing more than one sport. I also hear a lot of football coaches urging their kids to play whatever they want to. At least I have this from the football coaches at the school I root for. It is absolutely ridiculous to punish a kid and his family for not playing just the sport you coach. This is just pathetic and IF true, the coach needs to give up coaching altogether.

If it is true it is more than likely a school or Athletic Dept policy of some sort as opposed to a basketball coach himself. Maybe the policy is based on $ spent / kid as a whole & since he played football his money was applied there. If he also plays baseball maybe he will also have to pay something when baseball roles around. Just a thought, as I have seen somehting similar before.

Maybe the basketball team held fundraisers to prevent themselves from having to pay the $100 during football games/practices and the child was unable to participate. The people that worked got the money and those that didn't participate or had a limited role had to pay the difference.

That's the coaches fault. Ball players at Valley who play football as well participate in everything dealing with basketball as well as football, t-shirts were sold not long ago for basketball, and the ones playing football and basketball were selling basketball t-shirts, no kid should be responsible for paying to play athletics, they put in enough time and effort as it is, and the parents put out enough volunteer time already.

I think if the players involved, even if just the ones playing football was to go in and say if they dont get them free like the basketball only players, the coach would cave in give them to all the players. If the football players didnt play basketball like I am sure they wish to after football season, the basketball team itself would feel the players being gone. I just personally think it is bad that a coach would want to punish a kid for playing a different sport than what he coaches.

Personally, I think this information is miscontrued. The coaches are asking for $100 from everyone including BASKETBALL players only. If these children are wanting to play many sports the parents have to realize that also come numerous things that you have to purchase for each sport.

Every school that I know of buys their players shoes. The school gets them at a discount where they buy in bulk and they dont have to play taxes on them.

I know Allen Central boys pay for their shoes. I think the girls had fundraisers for shoes.

Why don't schools have a "shoot-a-thon" to raise some money!! That would be a good idea to raise some money for shoes, uniforms, practice gear, or whatever they feel as if they need.

Pike County schools must fund their own programs. Football teams reuse their game and practice cleats. I've even read in Lexington school athletes must pay upwards of $400-500 to participate. I'm thinking this was after a team won a state championship in baseball maybe Lafayette. Parents and athletes are given the opportunity to fund raise the money or simply pay the fee. Some do pay for shoes--some don't depending on the sport and their funds.

As far as I know and what I have heard in the past Pikeville buys their players shoes in almost every sport. Baseball, Basketball, and football I know they do.

I know each schools Athletic Depts. get so much money to spend and the money is divided up among the teams.Parents at AC with kids on sports teams volunter with different fundraisers to help with costs.Sometimes that amount is a little,sometimes a lot.

Well, you've not visited that many schools apparently. I played basketball on the high school and college levels. Up until college, all basketball players paid for their own shoes, always. Sounds to me like someone is jealous for some unknown reason and is trying to compensate lack of talent with excuses. However, they will have to come up with something a little better than "the school won't buy me shoes." As a matter of fact, anytime a kid couldn't pay, then the basketball coaches always took care of the kids. That has been my experience.

I will admit, I have not checked into which schools buys shoes and which dont lately. I just know that the schools I have been involved with always buys the players shoes. I never had to buy shoes when I played. My son has never had to buy shoes where he played. I didnt think anyone had to. I am sorry for the assumption. I do know that the school I am talking about used to buy the basketball shoes. From what I was told, they are still buying them for the players that play basketball only. If they just used the ticket or concession money from one game, then all of them would be covered. What it sounds like to me is not excuses for lack of talent. It sounds to me like the coaches only want their basketball players to play one sport only or they will punish them for doing two.

Well here is a thought about the situation.

Why don't people that have contacts with perspective schools talk to their contacts and ask whether they buy the players shoes or not. I don't know about basketball at Russell but the football team was supplied with everything that was needed to play the game. Helmets, shoes, pads, uniforms, mouthpieces and even bags to carry their equipment in. If I talk to the AD in a few days I will ask him about basketball.

So true.I've never known of a kid being turned down to play because of inability to pay.

I know at Belfry for basketball & football everything is provided.. In football, cleats, pads, helmets, mouthpieces, bags, even thier sweats & everything.. In basketball, they provide shoes, practice uniforms, sweatsuits, bags, even socks.. never cost a penny for a player, and never have to do fund raisers..

now I do know the baseball team used to have dances, and so did the volleyball team for fundraisers..But I think that was for long trips..

With all the fundraising and basketball camps being done, I don't understand why a basketball team couldn't afford to pay for their kids shoes. Where is all the money from camps going. I know some teams have about 150 kids in each of two camps per year and make close to $18,000-$20,000.
