Gutsy effort by both teams. Belfry stymied Alter’s running game and Alter did the same to Belfry. Two big plays and missed opportunities to get turnovers doomed BHS. On to the Battle of Pike County.

What a defensive struggle. This was like two heavyweights meeting in the middle of the ring and slugging. Both defenses brought there A game. Great game!

Tough loss for the Pirates just outside Dayton, OH last night. I'm usually the Belfry guy that gets on here after our games, win or lose, and really let the Pirates have it and usually just point out all the things they did wrong instead of giving them some credit. Well that's not happening this time. Belfry really showed me some grit, heart, and toughness in this game. A couple takeaways I had after the game:
1) Belfry's defense is the real deal folks! I haven't seen the Pirates play with this much passion and toughness in a long time on the defensive side of the ball as a team. They are absolutely laying the smack down on their opponents and almost completely shutting down any kind of inside rush. Archbishop Alter is a very good run team and Belfry's D went toe to toe with them. If this defense continues to play like this the rest of the year, alot of teams/players are going to feel pretty sore come Saturday mornings after playing against those boys from Pond Creek. This defense has the opportunity to do what those Ray Lewis led Baltimore Ravens defenses did a few years ago and that's carry the offense to a championship.
2) Big Jake Baisden and Jonathon Stepp are grown men! These two defensive studs are absolutely playing lights out for the Pirates and everyone is starting to take notice. Its amazing to see what's going on with these two young men right now. Cook, Mounts, Bentley, Coleman, Birchfield, Dixon, and others were already known on defense. These two have put their names right there with the rest of them. Like I said, our defense is the heart of our team right now and Baisden and Stepp are leading the charge.
3) Belfry was shutout last night for the first time since 2014. But was it because our offense played that bad or was it because Alter's defense was that good? I think it was the latter. It was just a smash mouth, hard hitting, physical four quarters of football that we came up short in. Losing Dixon in the first quarter really hurt us. This is not an excuse because even with Dixon in there the whole game I'm not sure if the outcome would have been different. But with him out it did allow Alter to focus and key on Bentley and Hensley more instead of having to worry about our "three headed backfield monster" and it threw our offense completely out of rythem.
4) Brett Coleman's first game back. I've said it before and still believe it, Coleman is one of our best players on the team. But you could tell that he was rusty and wasn't quite in rythem with the offense last night. Now that he's back and has a game under his belt, I look for our offense to take off and be even better than it was in the first two games. Add that to an already dominate defense and the Pirates will be down right scary.
5) Our offensive line has to do better, plain and simple. And I believe they will. Our interior line is doing ok. Their playing good enough to win football games. But other areas has some work to do and are going to have to get it figured out if we're going to make a run at #7. And I believe Coach Tackett and staff will get them there. I believe most of it has to do with inexperience. The more games they get under their belt the better they'll get. Biggest thing with the O-Line is we just have to stay healthy and keep our starting five on the football field. O-Line is our biggest concern as of right now.
Lastly, I'll give credit where credit is due. Archbishop Alter was just better than Belfry last night. They have some great players and a damn good coaching staff that went in at halftime tied 0-0, made the necessary adjustments, came out the second half, spread it out and went to work and won the game. Even if Coleman had been the starter all year and even if Dixon hadn't got injured in the first quarter not sure if the outcome would have changed. Maybe it would have but I'm not going to say that it would have because I don't know and nobody else does either. They won the game and thats all that matters. Congratulations to Alter and good luck the rest of the season.

One thing I've noticed about you is you ALWAYS keep it real. Win or lose! I think your Pirates will win State this year once they get everybody healthy and playing.

Itâs not often youâll see me as a reasonable voice on a football thread, but nice job Belfry. Kettering Alter, even if down, is loaded. Belfry is for real.

Thanks my friend, appreciate that. One thing I've always tried to do is just be honest and to never make any excuses. Alot of times that's all you see guys post after a lose is excuses. I can't stand that! Alot of Belfry guys do it to. IMO, there's no such thing as excuses, for a win or loss, just results. If your team gets beat, own it and move on. It's not like any of us on here played a role in it anyway, Lol! As far as Belfry, I think we have as good a chance as anybody else in 3A if we continue to play like we have been defensively and the O-Line develops and comes around. Like I've said before, I think our offensive backfield is one of the best in the state but they go nowhere without decent line play. So we'll see. Alot of football left to play and there's a few damn good football teams in 3A that could easily win it as well.
