Congrats to Andrew Taylor from Corbin on passing up Charles Thomas to become the all time leading scorer in 13th region history. This happened a few games ago but forgot to post about it. Andrew currently sits at 6th in all time scoring for the state.

CONGRATULATIONS ANDREW
I have watched him since the 3rd grade and knew he would be one of the best players to ever come out of this region.

They didnât even keep records in the 70âs, 80âs or 90âs. Even though this is a big feat in reality he
May not truly be the leading scorer in 13th Region history

The all-time leader in the state, King Kelly Coleman, is from the 50âs, Charles Thomas of Harlan, who Taylor just passed in the 13th, was from the early 90âs. Shannon Hoskins of Clay and Larry Gritton Jr. of OBI, who were also 3,000 point scorers in the 13th, were late 80s, early 90s. Now itâs true some folks would have had a lot more points had the three-pointer been in before the â87-88 season (Richie Farmer only had it his senior year, cost him the 3,000 club, he had 2900 and something). HCS will back me up on this, the great Phil Cox of Cawood probably would have had another 500 points on his total, he never had the three in his career. But anyway my point is Taylorâs spot on the list is legit. I might not be a Corbin fan, but the kid is a hell of a player.

If Any saw Ervin Stepp play , the 3 pointer may have put him around 4,000.

I seriously doubt Shannon Hoskins scored 3,000 in the 13th. He only played 2 years in the 13th. His freshman and sophomore years in the 14th.

Technically thatâs true because he played at MC Napier until his junior year. But when listed he has been called the second leading scorer in 13th region history in the media. So I guess itâs just how you interpret it.

Not for sure

It would be awesome to see how many
Points these legends would have scored
If they had the 3 point line back then. Richie Farmer did have the 3 point line for 2 years but his game was driving and popping. He was unstoppable.

Yeah, Hoskins' points at Perry wouldn't count for Clay or the 13th Region.

I remember when Phil broke the county record set by Wah Wah Jones in the 1940s, so some of the records go way back. Phil scored 2,401, I think, and it seemed most were either free throws, layups or 20-foot or more jumpers. He hit a lot from way downtown.

I agree that Erv Stepp was one of the best offensive threats I have seen. No doubt he would have scored over 4000 pts if there had been a 3 pt line back then.

HCS, can you do a bit of research and match these guys up with their senior year and regional championships? Interesting to see if we have a correlation between win or loss. To busy this time of year I understand.

Phil Cox should have been at UK. How can u pass up on a player like that???

Who do you need to know? I don't think I'd have to look most of them up.
Stepp graduated in 80.
Cox graduated in 81.

I sat next to Leonard Hamilton when he came up with coach Hall to watch Phil Cox play in the 1981 season.

Any list of the top scorers in the 13th region is incomplete without Bobbie Slusher of Lone Jack. He scored over 40 most games and once or twice over 80. He played a year or so for Rupp at UK before getting dismissed from the team for breaking team rules.

You are probably right. I'm sure the UK staff was confident Dickie Beal was their point guard of the future. Beal was a freshman at UK during Fox's senior year at Cawood.

Maybe 10 or so? Couple from each decade 80, 90, 2000 , 2010 and to present. Just wanted to see if their team won regionals their senior year. Those listed 3,000 + points.

I certainly donât disagree with that, I just know last year when Peyton Broughton was passing 3000 points it was widely reported the three in front of him from the 13th were Thomas, Hoskins and Gritton, (although I know you knew better).
In the KHSAA record books, Hoskins is listed as Clay Co., not MC Napier/Clay Co., I would guess thatâs where the confusion comes in, a lot of the younger guys reporting these days probably had no idea he didnât spend his entire career at Clay.
On another note, Cox went on and became the all-time leading scorer at Vandy Iâm pretty sure, without ever having the three-pointer in effect in his college career, am I right about that? He and I graduated in same year, and I was just in awe of his abilities as a scorer.
02-16-2018, 09:23 PM
Yeah, I guess they just list them where they graduated from and the year. I've seen players score 1,000 points and play at two different schools. To me, that becomes an individual honor when you switch schools. You aren't part of the 1,000-point club anywhere if you don't score 1,000 at one school.
I think you're right about Cox not playing with the 3-pointer at Vandy. He graduated in 85 and I think it started in college in 87. I graduated with him at Cawood, so I have followed his career all the way back to when he was at Loyall.
