HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – A strong defensive effort helped the Northern Kentucky University men's basketball team defeat Milwaukee on Thursday evening by a final score of 54-52. The Norse improve to 18-7 overall and 11-2 in the Horizon League. Milwaukee falls to 13-14 on the season and 6-8 in League play.


STATS LEADERS
Drew McDonald recorded his 12th double-double of the season and 10th in the last 15 games with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Tyler Sharpe added 12 points in his first start of the season.
Lavone Holland II chipped in six points, six assists and five rebounds.

TURNING POINT
Milwaukee's Bryce Barnes got the Panthers within two points at 54-52 with 1:02 to play in the game. The Panthers had the final possession of the game. After Jordan Bell's jumper rolled out, McDonald blocked Barnes' attempt at the buzzer to secure the victory for NKU.

FIRST-HALF SUMMARY
Northern Kentucky led by three at intermission, 27-24, after shooting 44 percent (11-of-25) and holding Milwaukee to just 38 percent (11-of-29).
Dantez Walton sparked the Norse off the bench, tallying six points on 3-for-4 shooting and two rebounds in the stanza. He also added a steal and assist.
Trailing 10-5, the Norse scored nine of the next 11 points in the game to take a 14-12 advantage.
Moments later, Sharpe knocked down a three and Jalen Tate scored on a layup to put NKU ahead by five, 21-16.
McDonald finished the half with five points and seven rebounds.
SECOND-HALF SUMMARY
McDonald knocked down a three-pointer early in the half to give NKU a 30-25 lead.
Milwaukee then went on a 6-0 run to take a 31-30 lead. The teams continued to exchange baskets throughout the half.
Trailing 39-36, the Norse outscored Milwaukee 12-2 over a period of 3:01 to take a 48-41 lead with 6:23 to play in the game.
However, Milwaukee cut the lead to 54-52 with 1:02 to play in the game. Then, attempts by both Bell and Barnes were off the mark.
The Norse shot 10-of-26 (38.5%) on field goals and 4-of-14 (28.6%) on three-point attempts during the half.
Milwaukee went 10-of-30 (30.0%) from the floor and 5-of-13 (38.5%) on attempts from beyond the arc.

GAME NOTES
NKU finished the game shooting 21-of-51 (41.2%) from the floor and 6-of-21 (28.6%) on three-pointers.
The Norse held Milwaukee to 21-of-59 (35.6%) on field goal attempts and just 6-of-24 (25.0%) on shots from behind the arc.
NKU had 15 assists on 21 made field goals.
The Norse bench outscored Milwaukee's bench 14-7.

NEXT UP
NKU hosts Green Bay on Saturday, Feb. 10. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at BB&T Arena, and the game will be broadcast live on the CW Cincinnati. The matchup is on Homecoming night for the Norse.
