I'm looking for a little help and/or feedback in regards to whether the schools that each of you are familar with allow for overnight trips to Tournaments, Camps, Field Trips or any other school related activity.
The school that I'm familar with has seldom allowed teams or groups to take overnight trips fearing the things that could possibility go wrong and not considering the benefits and experiences that the kids may receive by going away for a day or 2.
I realize there are two sides to this arguement and both sides have good arguements that they can make so I'm just trying to get an idea of how other schools approach this issue.

There is a ton of responsibility for the chaperone that travels and takes the group. Our school does allow the overnight trip and if need be more than one night. We have always done this and take a trip each year for basketball on a three or four night stay. It can be a valuable experience for the students but really it needs to be very well chaperoned. We also go to camp every year and stay four nights. travel is something that can be rewarding beyond measure for many that do not have the opportunty or finances at home to do so.

Our school does but I think it has to be approved by the Board of Ed. first.

any school affiliated trip has to be approved by the board.....
I went to Louisville with a class a couple of years ago on a field trip and stayed 2 nights.... we hit the zoo, Louisville Slugger Museum, Kentucky Kingdom and the Science IMAX center.... HAD a blast!!!
I know a lot of schools are not allowing field trips period let alone overnight ones.... IMO... it's up to the principal if they want to turn a travel ticket in and I guess money to cover the trip would help!! LOL... FUNDRAISING!!! YEAH.... UGH.... I hate it!!

The schools I went to in grade school and middle school didn't really take overnight trips so I'm not sure if they actually allowed it. Throughout high school we took overnight trips to volleyball camp and for some basketball tournaments. They use to take the seniors on a trip over Spring Break but I guess they didn't like my class and didn't take us...I'm not sure if they started it back up or not...

You can never be too careful.
If it a team going to a camp then they normally are placed in dorms, and they are much easier to keep an eye on. the better the camp the less you have to worry as the student tend to be worn down by the constant activity.
Trip with teams playing in tournaments can be good or bad, depends on the kids, and how well things are planned out.
Educational field trips can be great, you must have a schedule so that activities keep the kids as busy as possible.
Senior trips, band trips etc cna be wonderful but you will never have enough supervision. Plus the liability is unreal, a student must be supervised at all times, this can become extremly difficult to do especially during down time when no events, visits to parks etc are planned. Every year you see or read of students falling off balconies attempting to sneak out. I for one don't think students or parents realize how much pressure this places on those who are responsible for the welfare of the students.
Kids will be kids, they will and have taken things to the limit.
I speak from experience as both a student who went on overnight trips and as a chaperone, I know what i did, what i tried to do and what I actually got away with, and to be honest i swore the last time i went on a trip that had dead time that if we made it home without incident I would never do that again, and I havent.

When our school takes overnight trips all of the doors are taped and there are one or two chaperones who get up during the night to check and make sure that:
-No one has opened the doors
-There are no strangers (boys or girls) on that particular floor
-and to make sure that the students are not gettin' to loud and bothering the other guest.
