UPIKE 46 The Cumberlands 32
#1
WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- A pair of touchdown passes by Sani Warren late in the fourth quarter made the difference in a 46-32 win for the University of Pikeville football team at Cumberlands on Saturday night.

Bowen Smith added a short touchdown run and Romon Morris took an interception to the house 58 yards in the final two minutes to seal the comeback win.

Cumberlands had taken a 23-21 lead at the end of the third quarter when an errant snap sailed over Warren's head and out of the end zone for a safety. Milton Shelton added to the pain on the ensuing drive with a 13-yard touchdown run to put the Patriots in business with a 30-21 lead.

But the only points the Patriots would score the rest of the way came on a blocked extra point returned for two points. Arites Clark had caught a 76-yard touchdown pass from Warren to cut the deficit to just five at 32-27.

UPIKE's go-ahead score was unconventional, but counted just the same, as Jordan Owens tipped a missed catch in the air that somehow landed in Duke Ferguson's hands in the end zone. It made the score 33-32 after a failed two-point conversion, but the Bears never trailed again.

The Bears outscored Cumberlands 25-9 in the fourth quarter.

Warren completed 17-of-34 passes for 350 yards and three touchdowns. Clark hauled in three catches for 104 yards and a touchdown, which is tied for the seventh longest completion in program history at 76 yards. Xondre Willis led the ground game with 112 yards and a score on 19 carries.

Josiah Robbins went 26-of-49 for 299 yards and two touchdowns with Shon Jones as his top target, catching five passes for 101 yards.

Taeron Brown had a team-best nine tackles and Nathan Pray chipped in with eight. Morris finished with six tackles, the interception and two pass breakups.

UPIKE (4-3, 2-1 MSC Appalachian) was clicking on all cylinders to start the game, opening with a drive that included a 36-yard completion from Warren to Braxton Whitmore, a 10-yard completion to Ferguson to the 13 and Xondre Willis finishing things off with a 3-yard jet sweep.

The Bears' defense would force two straight 3-and-outs to open the game and the offense took care of business in between.

Warren started the Bears' second possession with a 64-yard hook up with Curtis Brown, then Tony White III added a pair of quarterback keepers to make it 14-0. The highlights of the next drive were a 30-yard rush by Willis, followed by Derrand Garrett making his first career reception in the end zone from 27-yards out to go up by 21 points with 4:11 on the clock.

Just before the end of the quarter, the Patriots (4-3, 1-2 MSC Appalachian) scored some points on a drive that started in UPIKE territory after a 55-yard kickoff return by Hunter Miniard. After forcing a fourth down at the 1-yard line, the Bears' missed a tackle on Austin Hatfield in the backfield and he continued on in for six.

The explosive offense found in the first 15 minutes was missing in the second as the only points put up came from Cumberlands on a long touchdown catch by Shon Jones with 4:50 to play in the half. Joe Rose, who came into the game 11-of-13 on field goals, had his 39 yarder blocked by Romon Morris as time expired in the half.

Cumberlands controlled the third quarter with all nine points in the frame on Robbins' 35-yard touchdown pass to Jones and the safety.

This seat is getting hotter and hotter. They do less with more talent than anyone I have seen. Looks like the defense needs changed or replaced. 21 points opening quarter and 25 the closing quarter. All with a very weak schedule. With the addition of the teams out of FL. Conf. and Cinci. team this schedule is the weakest it has been in years. HOTTER < HOTTER
