Once again, WMDJ Radio along with the Martin & Prestonsburg Dairy Queen is proud to present our 5th Annual "Ultimate Player of the Year" award during the upcoming 58th District Tournament to be held at South Floyd High School.
During the regular season, we have been honored to recognize 12 players for their efforts on the court as our "Star Performers of the Week". We have listed those players below as our version of an All-Conference team. I know we have left some well deserving players off our list, but we have only 12 weeks at our disposal. As a new country song by Bucky Covington says, "Not everyone made the team when we tried...We got disappointed, but that was all right." We have so many great athletes throughout the 58th District and to everyone, keep up the good work.
We have also listed our previous winners of the "Ultimate Player of the Year". This year's receipient of the UPY will receive a trophy, along with a $500 college scholarship to be presented after the district finals.

Had the chance to see all the previous winners play in the District tourny and all were great players. The list of this years players are all very deserving and each are key members of their respective teams. Good luck to each and hope to see another great 58th tourny.

It's a pretty cool what you do for these kids, when you definitly don't have to. I sure the players and parents are very apprecitave, and it means alot to them. Any time you help pay for a kids college its a big deal, keep up the good work.

Kind of odd no winners out of Prestonsburg though. Dont get me wrong these kids that have won were great kids in H.S. . Is it just for the team's WMDJ covers most?

Is it just for the team's WMDJ covers most? The award is for any senior basketball player who intends to further their education past the high school level. It is for all Floyd County teams. The winner receives a trophy and a $500 scholarship. Any senior player in Floyd County is up for the award. Did I get that correct, jammin jamey?

I'm sorry, I was speaking of the UPY. It's a great award and I in no way meant to ruffle any feathers. Thanks for the info.

All players and teams in the 58th District are considered, even "those teams" WMDJ doesn't see every week. As you can see from the players listed above, Prestonsburg players have received the weekly awards.
Actually, your comment is probably directed to the fact that Sean Leslie didn't win the award last year from Prestosnburg, despite winning the Conference Player of the Year Award. I think Sean was an exceptional player and conducted himself very well on & off the court and represented his school very well, as did Brandon Kidd from Betsy Layne, who was the recepient.

I got the weekly award once in 02-03. Thought that was kinda cool myself. LOL Thought I would throw that out there, like anyone cares.

Mathematically there cannot be a tie or "co-poy" to answer your question Hulk.
BCF4L, can you still fit into your sweatshirt or has your "playing weight" caught up with you? j/k.

ima take josh martin from AC

Ryan Collins and Ethan Johnson has to be the front runner IMO...Collins is the best player and leading scorer on the #1 seed, and Johnson although not having team success has played like one of the top players in the region and has had the best career out of all these guys and was a top 5 player in the region Pre-Season..So I say one of these two are deserving of the award, just my prediction though.
03-01-2007, 08:56 PM
i agree moe it has to be either Collins or Johnson....
03-01-2007, 10:40 PM
I think you have to throw Bl's Justin Collins in the mix. He had 22 last night took over in the 3rd and helped his team win. Without him they don't win.
