The Cumberlands 23 Warner 7
#1
Williamsburg, KY – On a perfect night for football in southeastern Kentucky, the Patriots led by a strong showing from their defensive unit would take down the Royals of Warner University 23-7 in their 2017 season opener. The game, sponsored by Ellison Funeral Home and Teresa R. Ellison, LMT, had an electric atmosphere with well over 2,500 in attendance to see the Patriot victory firsthand.

Warner would open the game with the ball and move it down to the UC 29 yard line before being stopped on a big fourth down as Jamaria Patterson would knock down his first of three passes on the night to give the Patriots their first possession. After trading field position over the next two series, UC would get good field position in their third offensive series at the Warner 45 yard line. The Pats would work it all the way down to the Warner eight yard line before a penalty would set them back. Joe Rose would come in to kick a 34 yard field goal for the first points of the game, pushing UC ahead 3-0.

After holding Warner again to another scoreless drive, UC would put together a nice seven play drive that covered 51 yards and took them into the second quarter where Kevin Claussen would find the end zone from three yards out for the first UC touchdown of the season. A Rose point after attempt was good to extend UC's lead to 10-0. The Patriot defense would continue to show its toughness, holding Warner to another three-and-out. UC would put together an efficient drive on their next possession covering just 29 yards on 11 plays, but milked nearly four and a half minutes off the clock as it was capped off with Rose's second field goal of the game, this one from 43 yards out to push UC ahead 13-0.

The teams would trade possessions once more before Warner would threaten late in the half. Royals' quarterback DJ Davis would push his team down the field on a nine play-64 yard drive, but on first and goal from the UC ten yard line, his pass intended for Theo Hammonds would be intercepted by Jamaria Patterson, sending the Patriots into the locker room up 13-0 at the half.

In the third, UC would go three-and-out in their first possession as Warner started their first series of the second half in good field position at the UC 48 yard line. After one first down, the Royals would be stopped again and would be forced to try a 47 yard field goal that would come up short off the upright. After another quick Patriot series, Warner would finally put together their only scoring drive of the night, covering 80 yards on six plays including a big 44 yard pass from Davis to Josh Beneby and a fifteen yard penalty that was added to the end of the play. Davis would then call his own number, running it in from 14 yards out for a Warner touchdown. The extra point by Geness Kennedy-May was good, cutting the Patriot lead to 13-7.

Although the momentum looked as if it was moving towards the Warner sideline, that was quickly taken back by the Patriots as Shon Jones would return the ensuing kickoff back 67 yards all the way to the Warner 21 yard line. The Patriots were unable to pick up a first down in the series, but Joe Rose was able to make the drive count with his third field goal of the contest, this one from 34 yards out to make it a two-score game at 16-7 UC.

After a Warner punt in their next series, UC would begin to drive as play entered the fourth quarter. On the first play of the fourth, quarterback Josiah Robbins would look for Jalen Smith cutting across the middle, but was picked off by Raheem Phillips, giving Warner possession at their own 38 yard line. Here, the UC defense would step up big again, holding the Royals to just two yards in the three-and-out possession. UC would milk the clock again on their next possession, taking just over six minutes off the board on an 11 play, 50 yard drive that saw a 33 yard field goal attempt by Rose sail wide left.

After the Royals sixth three-and-out possession of the game, UC would look to control the line of scrimmage and the clock. After what looked to be an unfortunate three-and-out for the Patriots, the punt by Devon McMillin would be muffed by Bryant Benton and recovered by Jamaria Patterson, giving UC another chance at icing the game from the Warner 30 yard line. It would take eight plays to cover the 30 yards as Austin Hatfield would punch it into the end zone from two yards out for another Patriot touchdown. The Rose PAT was good, extending UC's lead to 23-7 with just over a minute to play. Warner would snag a handful of yards on their final possession before time expired, giving UC a 23-7 win over Warner, snapping the Royals' 7 game winning streak dating back to last season.

Milton Shelton would lead the way for UC on the ground with 53 yards on nine carries. Shon Jones added six rushes for 37 yards while catching three passes for 25 yards. Austin Hatfield and Kevin Claussen combined for 48 yards of rushing and the two Patriots touchdowns. Josiah Robbins ended his night 18-29 through the air for 101 yards with the one interception. Jalen Smith caught five passes for 27 yards. Hunter Miniard added 35 yards on four grabs.

Defensively, the Patriots were led by Adam Johnson with seven tackles (six solo) with two tackles for loss. Jay Woods added 5 total stops (3 solo) with a half sack and a half tackle for loss. Patterson was a man possessed in the secondary for the Patriots, tallying four solo tackles along with a fumble recovery, an interception, and three pass breakups.

The Patriots now turn their attention to next Saturday, September 2nd, as they will host Cumberland University in non-conference action. Kickoff against the Phoenix is set for 7 pm.
