Clay County 69 North Laurel 67
#1
Final from London. Fouls, fouls, and more fouls. It was a physical but entertaining game. Congratulations to Peyton Broughton. He became North's all time leading scorer tonight. An impressive feat for a junior. Congratulations to Clay. Hopefully this got them back on track.

Excellent high school game, high energy, hotly contested but cleanly played. Too many fouls called, I think they shot 81 free throws between them. Best players on each team played well, not spectacular performances, but very good ones. Clay took the lead in the second quarter, North would fight back then fall back the whole second half, Clay made enough plays to get the win. Play again Tuesday at Manchester, then surely in district finals at Jackson Co. later, looking forward to those, this one was a lot of fun.

Could a mod put this over on the other thread that was started on this game, I must have been typing mine while Jean Claude was as well.

Clay County looked much better tonight as a team passing the ball an sharing the ball. Clay County is back. Confusederiously:

Great high school atmosphere. Nice crowd. Too bad the second half was a foul fest. Hats off to the Tiger bench guys. Already short Will Sexton, Clay loses Gray, Gabbard and Arnold to fouls. Decker and Vaughn gave the Tigers decent minutes at crunch time. Decker had a big bucket! Broughton flat out nailed his free throws tonight. I thought Jeffers and Gray played well. Wes Wolfe had a great game for the Tigers, really stepping it up on both ends of the floor. I thought Coach Marcum's move to let Wolfe handle the ball more was key to the win. It'll be interesting to see what moves will be made for the next matchup between these two.

I respectfully disagree Van Hagar. First half was pretty good basketball. Second half was no basketball. 81 free throws in the game and the fourth quarter took 40 minutes to play. Both teams did the best they could with absolutely nothing accomplished due to the sideshow. Hopefully no one was there recruiting any of the players, if they were I suppose they found out who can shoot foul shots, nothing more. This game was a lot of things, great not being one of them.

13th region referees are an absolute joke. By far the worst I've seen throughout this state. Thank goodness we don't have to put up with these clowns in the regional tournament. This game needs to be reported to the khsaa. Awful!!! With that said, congrats to the Tigers.

do yourself a favor and get to CCHS next Tuesday night. Good matchup between these two. i predicted nl would get the first matchup, but clay made just enough plays to hold the lead and pull it out. I don't know how much different this game would have been if sexton would have played, but I sure do appreciate the way he plays the game. Hope he gets healthy soon. Looking forward to next week. Btw, 13th region officiating has to be the worst!

Yeah way to many foul calls and not consistent at all. Its impossible for players to get in any kind of rhythm and flow playing in 12 second intervals. Clay did pass the ball much better tonight, and Decker is gonna be a difference maker for this team

Well there was colleges in the house tonight and i agree it why in the world would you call a game like that. You could still tell who the best players where but this game didnt allow them to showcase their talent. Hopefully they seen enough to make another trip to watch them.

I thought Decker showed emotions tonight. He actually got me pumped up when he started waving his arm to the crowd. I loved that :Cheerlead. Wes Wolfe play great tonight he was due a game like this. :worthy:

Agree with you completely....but we shouldn't be surprised by all the fouls in this game. 2 of the 3 officials that called this game are well known whistle blowers and they always think the crowd is there to see them.

You guys are right, and I should have chosen my words more carefully. It was a great night in terms of atmosphere in the gym and the effort by both teams, but I heard whistles in my sleep last night. I thought one of the three officials, who hasn't been calling as long, was in over his head, wasn't ready for that type of setting. And it just seems like its contagious, if one is blowing his whistle too much, seems like the other two think they have to keep up.
Anyway, back to the game, Wolfe I thought was great last night. Always have liked his demeanor on the court, I noticed in pregame warmups he was having a good time with the North student section, nothing out-of-way, just kids having fun, love to see that. Sexton's injury may help Clay in the long run, because Arnold and now Decker are going to see some important minutes, will help their bench when Sexton does come back.
On the North side, I was very encouraged by their grit, when they got down 11 in the third it could have been over, but they dug in and took it to the wire. One thing that drives me nuts--would it be too much to ask to have one timeout left for the last few possessions of the game? In almost every close game I have ever seen North play, Brad uses all his timeouts well before the final buzzer. I know you can't take them with you, but maybe sit on one? Just in case? And also add my congratulations to Peyton for passing Josh Seidel as North's all-time leading boys scorer. If he is healthy for the rest of his career, he'll get close to the 3,000 mark.

The 13th region is blest with a number of refs who like to put on a show! Smile

I would've loved seeing this game. We play at Manchester tomorrow, and it is currently snowing like a blizzard here in Harlan!

Congratulations Tigers!!

Okay, I have never merged threads before, but I gave this one a shot. Hope everybody can still SEE it!!

Congrats to Tiggers. Jags have really stepped up this year. Broughton is tremendous. 13th region refs are famous for being bad.
#19
You did great Granny Bear. As expected.

Entertaining game 13th wide open this year. Just glad 11th region refs will help decide true champion not the debacle those three where last night.
#21
North is definitely in the hunt in 13th
#22
I've never understood why they don't try to the best referees the region has to offer, and use them for the better games.
#23
Kevin Hembree, who called this game, had the Madison Central-Ballard state championship game a couple of years ago, so he is highly regarded. Probably for a separate thread, but I'd be interested to see who everybody thinks the top three are.

This is a serious question for you guys...Are the 13th region officials corrupt or are they really as bad as they seem to be? It seems to be getting worse each game I watch.

I believe it to be both. Some are just plain no good, while some are dirty. If the common fan knew how much money changed hands on these high school games it would blow their mind.
