been hearing about a rule change about players only being able to play Varsity for four years anyone heard anything and how does that affect 7/8 graders playing on Varisty now?

It doesn't affect middle schoolers playing up. It's once you hit 9th grade when you have only 4 years of varsity playing time

I been told that the rule is if a grade school kid playing up. if you are in the 7th or 8th grade, you can't start for the high school team. if you start when you are in the 8th grade you can't play there SR year. if they start a game there 7th grade they can't play there JR or SR year. But if they don't start they can still play. that is what someone told me.

The only thing changed about middle school and playing up is no longer can 5th and below dress or play jv and varsity. That was added last year, but players can be grand fathered in.

That doesn't make any sense at all.
Think about it. All a coach would do is start someone else, call a timeout and put the better player in.
SOK is right about this.

That 6th grader must have played last year, because 6th grade and lower are no longer allowed to participate on high school basketball.

Not sure about this rule, but I believe that the KHSAA middle school rules go into effect next year. Holdbacks were allowed to participate this season, but cannot next year.

If middle schoolers could not play girls high school basketball they would be several schools that could not field teams.

If you were held back this year regardless of what grade 6th-12th, you can't play high school ball your holdback year. This has been a rule since the 90's.
Also, if the 6th grader played high school ball last year as a 5th grader, they are grandfathered in and can play.
If you stop middle schoolers from playing high school, many teams would struggle to put a team on the court.

I thought it was 6th but played it safe... Thank you for clarification. I personally do not like the rule as playing younger kids helps small schools. Not necessarily playing but getting the practice time in.

The 6th grade player listed on Pburg's roster is on the grandfathered participation list that allows them to play at HS level.

Let me get this straight. Pburg had a 5th grader on their roster last year?
02-13-2015, 01:13 AM
by what everyone is saying the 6th grader that play for PCC is not allow to play. she was not on the team last year. so how is it she can play this year.
02-13-2015, 08:25 PM
Once the rule was passed, all KHSAA schools were allowed to submit a list of players that had participate in a HS sport. They were grandfathered from prior year(s). I don't know what defines participation in the ruling but there were close to a 1000 listed for 2013-14 school year and around 200 from 2012-13 school year. My guess is that with the knowledge of the rule going into effect schools were proactive in getting their athletes on the list.
02-14-2015, 09:53 PM
So pburg had a 5th grader aging varsity last year?
02-14-2015, 09:57 PM
Middle Schooler's will still be allowed to play high school varsity
02-14-2015, 10:57 PM
Well the player in question for Pburg isn't on last season's roster for basketball. Actually she isn't on last years roster for any of the other sports. So how is she allowed to play?

A question that will not be answered.

The roster on the website is only for varsity. The rule doesn't say that she had to play varsity. If she played freshman ball or JV her name wouldn't be on KHSAA website. I'm sure they are aware of the rules.
02-16-2015, 12:42 AM
I know for a fact Coach Gearheart brought the player in question up last year to play freshman and JV so he could use her this season. Prestonsburg was pretty low in numbers and talent awhile back and this made perfect sense. She wouldn't show up on the Varsity roster for last year because she only played in a few JV and Freshman games. Prestonsburg is really young and they have to rely on those young players to have numbers. Can't fault them for it. She's going to be a pretty good player.
02-16-2015, 03:42 AM
the 6th grader that play at PCC, she was not on the FR team, JV team or Varsity team last year.
02-16-2015, 03:46 AM
Teams can bring middle school kids down to the high school teams but just because they aren't on the roster doesn't mean they aren't on the high school team. They can play on Freshmen and JV teams without being on varsity
02-17-2015, 01:17 AM
the 6th grade girl at Perry Co Central was not on the FR or JV team last year. by what people is saying on here about the rule. she should not be able to play this year. that way Hazard did not let that one girl play for them this year. the one at Hazard is in the 5th or 6th grade this year, but she went to camp and practice with them all season.
