This is taken from the Daily independent.
My question for the local residents is this. Would the move that was discussed constitute a bona fide change in residence? Is there a difference in the location or is it just a different name for the same location? If it is an actual move then why would there be any question as to his eligibility?
I'm just looking for clarification of the issue. I don't want to turn this thread into a huge argument for illegal transfers. If it goes that way I will close the thread.

The family of an eastern Kentucky student is suing the state athletic association for ruling him ineligible to play football. Richard Gilliam has not played since the KHSAA on Sept. 15th denied his privileges on the field citing his recent transfer from Belfry High School in Pike County to Pike County Central High School. The association's bylaws state that students who change high school are ineligible for a year, unless they meet one of several exceptions, including a "bona fide" change in residence. The Gilliams contend that their move from Lower John's Creek to Ratliff's Ridge is a bone fide change in residence. The suit, filed Tuesday in circuit court, seeks an order that would suspend the association's ruling and also for an emergency hearing.

I believe it was an actual move but the issue seems to be that the student was living in Pike Centrals district originally(lower Johns Creek)while attending Belfry then transferred to Pike Central even though a bona fide move, the student would have still been in the same district had he been at Pike Central.

Thanks for the clarification. I just wondered why they would raised such a fuss over a legitimate move. Now I understand.

I personally disagree with the decission if these facts are correct.... depending on where his house is at JC, theres a difference in driving every morning and afternoon from Johns Creek to Belfry and from Ratliffs Creek to PC. And you cant compare that to having to drive from Ratliffs Creek to Belfry everyday which is what he would have to do in order to continue to play ball after the move. IMHO NOT fair to the kid.

I believe its an honest move. If the kid left PC to go to Belfry then I would be more skeptical. IMO when RT. 119 gets all the way finished youll see alot of kids off Johns Creek transferring to Belfry.

^tru.. i used to live about a mile from lower johns creek. and in some cases, i could have made it to belfry just as easy as i could have made it to pike central.
it is Central's district, but depending on what you want, and if you don't care to take your kid to school every morning, then in some lower j.c. places you could either go to Belry, P'burg, or Pike Central.
Funny thing is, when i was in high school, i actually lived closer to p'burg, than either belfry or central.
So if this kid moved to Ratliff's Creek, then i say let him play at P.C. i mean it's about 5 minutes from central compared to 15-45 depending on traffic, from belfry

If the family moved to Ratliff's Creek, there should be no question that he could play for Pike Central.

I think the KHSAA made the right decision, based on their rules.
If you live in one district and choose to go to school in another, then you have made your choice. If you later decide to attend the school in your district, even if you move closer to it, by rule, you have to sit a year.
It may seem unfair in this one case, and a court challenge may allow him to play, but for the greater good, the rule should stand. It eliminates a lot of confusion in other cases and closes what could be a recruiting loophole for others.

I feel sorry for the kid because he can't play...but I agree. Rules are rules.
