Ashland loses two basketball players
Dixson cousins transferring

Aaron Snyder The Independent

ASHLAND — Basketball standout Dikembe Dixson is no longer enrolled at Ashland Blazer High School, according to school officials. Neither is his cousin, Montrell, who was set to join the Tomcats on the court.

Their departure was official on Tuesday.

The two have transferred to another school in Kentucky, but their new destination was unclear as of Wednesday night, as calls to schools in question had not been returned.

Dikembe, a 6-foot-6 junior forward, averaged 19.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game last season, leading the Tomcats in both categories. He was considered a top player in the 16th Region.

Montrell, who had recently transferred to Ashland, participated with the Tomcats this summer. He is a sophomore.

So the move is now official. How does this change the landscape of the 16th?

Another one and done.

I have heard Thomas Nelson this morning is where he is enrolling today.

Youngmans school right?
#36
That is correct

Its official Thomas Nelson is where the Dixsons are going.

How did the cousins land in Nelson County? I feel sure it was the same way that they came to Ashland, don't you?

When players with absolutely no ties to an area are recruited to a school, it is reasonable to conclude that they were offered more than an education. Such players, and their families, come for the "fringe benefits" offered by the "unofficial representatives" of the school. Thus, the players have no loyalty to the school nor to its program. Understandably they often move on when better "fringe benefits" are offered. It could be more "financial security" or it could be the opportunity to play in a higher profile situation with a far better chance of reaching Rupp Arena. It is reasonable to assume that that may well be what happened here. It looks so obvious that even the KHSAA should pick up on it- but likely won't do so.

What I don't understand is why Ashland got itself into this situation. Ashland, from the top to the bottom of the pecking order, was completely paranoid and obsessed by the Rose Hill situation during the Mayo-Walker days. It apparently caused them many sleepless nights and large telephone bills from having KHSAA on constant speed dial. They surely saw that, when North College Hill offered a better "opportunity", the boys fled. They should have known that, since their "acquisition" of the Dixson cousins appears to have been amazingly similar, the end result would be the same. The Dixsons had no reason to be impressed by all that talk of the alleged "Tomcat Tradition". Why would they?

And, indeed, the end result, not surprisingly, was the same. One would think that lessons should have been learned.

Will Buddy survive another season if they don't make it to Rupp? Will Dirk and Dicky raise such a stink on the radio that the Ashlanders will collaborate once again to have another coach come in to that storied program with all of that hardware and all of that tradition since the civil war? The cash cow must have had a limit for the Dixsons. Then cuz comes down and there's another mouth to feed. The demand overwhelmed the kitty.
