Pikeville overcomes Hazard, 62-50.

Last night, actually the game ended early Sunday morning the Pikeville Panthers and Hazard Bulldogs hooked up in what would have been deemed an ESPN instant classic had the network been there. This game had so many twist and turns a mathematician would have been needed to keep count.

Caleb Holcomb got things started for the Bulldogs defense as he got to Austin Charles for a three yard loss, on a broken play.

At the 7:01 mark of the opening quarter it looked like Pikeville was set to get a big gain, but Ben Maynard dropped a pass, on a play that he was wide opened on.

Daric Pugh would pick up twenty-four yard on a play he showed some nice power on and used some nice work by his offensive line, this was with 6:52 left in the opening quarter of play.
Just fifty seconds later Pikeville would score on a six-yard run by,Pugh. Clay Stone hit the point after kick to give Pikeville a, 7-0 lead. The drive took eleven plays and totaled sixty-three-yards.

Hazard wasted no time in tying things up. Brandon Jones, who is built like a tank, but runs like a dear used a sweet stiff are to score, on a fifty-nine-yard run. Kevin Edwards was good on the point after kick.

Pikeville faced a fourth and two with 3:49 showing on the clock when the elected to go for it. Behind the work from his offensive line Chase Hall picked up the first down. Early on in this one the offensive line of Pikeville had established it strength as they were putting it on the defensive front from Hazard.

With a little under two minutes left in the quarter Chase Hall on a nice delay draw type play busted loose on a thirty -yard run, where he show a nice move to get the big gain.

Facing a third and six with a little over a minute left Pugh picked up the first down going right up the gut using more nice work from his linemen.

Just four seconds into the 2nd quarter the Panthers scored again, this time it was Hall blasting in from a yard out. A.J. Vanderbeck completed the two-point conversion run, giving the Panthers a 15-7 lead. The drive lasted 13-plays and went for 64-yards.

The Bulldogs responded with a score just a little over minute later, with a thirty-two yard pass from #12 to Trey Higgins. The point after kick was blocked by Cody Estep, leaving the score, 15-13 Pikeville, with 10:47 left in the half. The drive needed only took four-plays and totaled fifty-one-yards.

With 9:53 left in the half Pikeville would fumbled the ball, on what looked like a broken play, where the running back went one way and the quarterback expected him to go the other way. Making the recovery for the Bulldogs was Cole Ratliff.

The Bulldogs took just three plays to end the twenty-one-yard scoring drive, with Jones doing the honors, from five -yards out. Kody Arnett converted the two-point run giving the visitors a, 21-15 lead, with 9:06 left in the half.

Estep would twist and turn break a tackle and get another nice gain, with 1:06 showing on the clock and he was able to get out of bounds.

With, 43 left in the half Hall seemed to carry six Bulldogs into the end zone for the Panthers score tying things up, at twenty-one. The point after was missed. The scoring drive took five plays and totaled sixty-one-yards.

The half ended with Christopher Hudson using his height and long arms to his advantage to bring in a nicely throw ball for a thirty-six-yard touchdown. The point after kick gave to Bulldogs a 28-21 halftime lead.

So many times you will see a huge play like this take the fight out of a team, and as the teams headed back to the field that was the thing on the minds of some setting around me about that play and the Panthers.

The answer was given in the third quarter when the Panthers scored 21 unanswered points.

Pikeville got a nice run from Austin Black on their fourth offensive play of the quarter. Black received some nice blocking by the line as he picked up nine-yards to the Bulldogs one.

Black would power in from the one to close out the 58-yard 5-play drive with, 7:48 left in the quarter. The point after kick knotted this one up at, 28.

With 5:19 left in the quarter Alex Francis fumbled the ball after a nice run and recovering it for the Panthers was Black.

Pikeville would showcase Mr. Hall on the ensuing drive as he toted the ball three times picking up fifty-yards and a touchdown. The point after gave the Panthers a 35-28 lead, with 4:33 left in the third quarter.

1:54 showed on the third quarter clock, with Hazard facing fourth and eleven. The Bulldogs quarterback took off to his left and picked up 10.75 yards, butt that was not enough and the Panthers would get the ball back once again.

The Panthers needed only three-plays to score again, with the score coming on a, 85-yard touchdown pass to the very talented Cody Estep, who showed he has an extra gear or two. The drive totaled 86 yards. The point after gave the Panthers a 42-28 lead, with 1:07 left in the quarter.

The Panters would score with 10:45 left in the game, when Cody Charles picked off a pass and raced 73-yards for the score. The point after kick increased the lead to,49-28.

At the 7:48 mark of the final fram it appeared the Panthers put this one away when Estep took the ball away from Charles at the three-yard line and he raced for a 97-yard score. The point after made this a 56-28 game and it appeared not only was this one ever, but it was going to go down as another blowout in the 2013 Pike County Bowl. The only thing was someone forgot to tell the Bulldogs that, and they would show everyone why you never quit playing until there are all zero's on the time clock.

Hazard ended a 4-play 65 yard drive, when Kody Arnettt used a nice little cut move to go thirty-five-yards for a score. A two-point conversion failed leaving the score, 56-34, with 6;22 left.

Hazard recovered a beautiful onside kick, with 6:13 left in the game.

5:04 was left , when Kody Arnett scored from four-yards out and after #12 converted the two point play with a run, the score was 56-42.

After a 2nd onside kick recovery the Bulldogs cut the lad to 56-50, when Hudson caught a thirty-six yard touchdown pass and Jones rambled in for the two point conversion.

The Panthers faithful held their breath as the Bulldogs lined up for another onside kick, This time the Panthers were able to recover it and finally get the offense back on the field.

The Panthers needed 7-plays to go 54-yards for the games final score. Austin Black scored from 12-yards out on a third and six play. A two point try was stopped by Hazard leaving the score, 62-50.

The Panthers defense got a sack from Isaac Lucas with 1:12 left and a interception from A.J. Vanderbeck, with 40.1 left.

Looks like Hazard needs some defensive changes. Carry over from
the Fairview game. Hazard sits back to much. Need to bring a lot more pressure.

Nice work Newark. As I suspected...NO defense. There is a difference in playing defense and having good ball awareness. Pikeville's kids obviously need not practice strips, recoveries, etc. but sounds like both teams could use work on tackling and I am suprised, with the staff on each sideline, there wasnt a better game plan on that side of the ball.
