TAYLORSVILLE – In the end, an old enemy showed up at Collins' gate Tuesday night.
Anderson County took advantage of numerous Collins defensive miscues to defeat the Titans, 7-4, in a 10-inning, semifinal thriller at the 30th District Tournament at Spencer County High School.
An unofficial count by The Anderson Newscredited Collins with 10 errors leading to six unearned runs. Officially, Collins Coach Jim Axline said he knew his team had far too many to beat an Anderson team that was playing well heading into the post-season.
“We thought we had gotten rid of that,” Axline said. “Early in the season, we were having a lot of problems with errors but had not had them lately. That’s [Anderson is] a good team, and a good team will make you pay.”
The Bearcats did so in the 10th, when the Collins defense committed two bases-loaded errors allowing three runs.
“That was what we wanted to do at the plate,” Anderson Coach Brian Glass said. “We wanted to get our bunts down on the ground, and we felt our speed could force some errors.”
Collins had rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the bottom of the seventh, reaching Anderson sophomore Madison Brummett for two runs.
Sara Chambers doubled home Lindsay Ketcham, then with the Titans down to their last strike, Amanda Buresh blooped a single down the left-field line, scoring pinch runner Samantha Veal, sending the game to extra innings.
The first time the teams met, Collins won, 4-2, in eight innings.
Neither team threatened again until Anderson erupted in the decisive 10th inning.
“I was so proud of the girls,” Axline said. “They didn't lay down, and they kept battling back.”
Becca Mouser got Collins on the board in the bottom of the first driving in Bailey Rankin with a single, then after Anderson had pushed ahead with two in the second, Rankin tied things with a fifth-inning double, scoring Ketcham. Anderson scored unearned runs in the sixth and seventh before Collins' dramatic rally.
Collins pitcher Jeneca Thomas battled in her final high school game, striking out six and giving up eight hits. “She is a great pitcher,” Glass said. “She hits her spots so well.”
But it was not enough to overcome a porous defense.
“I was proud of them and told my kids I loved them,” Axline said.
Anderson, now 16-13, moves on to play Spencer County in the district championship game tonight. Collins finished at 18-16.
