Jacob Smalley drove in the eventual game-winning run Monday evening with a sixth-inning double, helping Ludlow win 6-3 over Villa Madonna and advance in the 34th District tournament.
With the score tied 3-3 in the sixth inning, Geoffrey Thornsburg hit a leadoff triple into the left center-field gap and came around to score on the Smalley double to give Ludlow the 4-3 lead.
They played small ball to tack on two more runs and let starting pitcher Tim Helmer take it from there.
Helmer threw a complete game and picked up six strikeouts along the way to earn the victory and help Ludlow advance to play Dixie Heights this evening.
Tonight’s match up between Ludlow and Dixie Heights will be a rematch of the game played on March 27, which Dixie won by a score of 14-1.
