Lehigh Valley 4 - Bats 1
#1
In a battle between former major league pitchers, Scott Elarton had the better night, surrendering just one hit in six innings in the Lehigh Valley IronPigs’ 4-1 victory over the Louisville Bats on Friday night at Louisville Slugger Field.

Elarton, 36, and fellow right-hander Brett Tomko, 39, have 21 years of major league experience and 156 victories between them.

Elarton (4-1), the reigning International League Pitcher of the Week, held the bats hitless until Denis Phipps’ single in the fourth. That would be the only hit he allowed in extending his shutout streak to 16 innings. He walked three and struck out three.

Tomko (0-4) gave up three runs and seven hits with two walks and a strikeout in 61/3 innings.

Kristopher Negron’s homer to left field off reliever Joe Savery finally got Louisville on the board in the eighth, but Michael Schwimer struck out the side in the ninth for his third save. The Bats are now 1-23 when trailing after seven innings.

Louisville had runners on first and second with one out in the second, but Bill Rhinehart, batting .344 in May, hit into a double play.

Kevin Frandsen’s two-out, two-run double in the third gave the IronPigs a 2-0 advantage. Tomko avoided more damage when Cody Overbeck grounded out to second baseman Chris Valaika with runners on second and third.

The IronPigs loaded the bases with two out in the fifth, but Tomko retired Overbeck on a grounder to third baseman Mike Costanzo.

John Suomi led off the Lehigh Valley sixth with a double to right field, but Tomko picked him off second, and Michael Spidale hit into a double play.

Bats reliever Travis Webb took over in the sixth, but the first batter he faced, Rich Thompson, drilled an RBI triple to make it 3-0. After striking out the next batter, Webb was replaced by Kanekoa Texeira, who got Frandsen to ground out to end the inning.

Savery took the mound for the IronPigs in the seventh and continued where Elarton left off, retiring three of four batters.

Lehigh Valley’s Derrick Mitchell extended his hitting streak to eight with an eighth-inning homer off Texeira that made it 4-0.http://www.courier-journal.com/article/2...|text|Home
