PIKEVILLE â Senior Andrew Roberts is the lone starter back from last seasonâs Betsy Layne team that captured the All âAâ Classic statewide title. As a junior, Roberts averaged 8.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game for the highly-successful Bobcats. He was ranked as one of the top-five 15th Region players during the preseason and has enjoyed a stellar senior campaign. Last week, following Betsy Layneâs loss to Prestonsburg in the 58th District championship game, Roberts was named the Floyd County Conference Player of the Year. This week, Roberts continues to lead the Bobcats.Roberts had 16 points and 11 rebounds in Betsy Layneâs opening round win over Pikeville in the regional tourney. Thatâs the same Pikeville program that pulled off an upset win over Betsy Layne in the 2011 15th Region Tournament.
Through 28 games, Roberts is averaging 13.1 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds per game for the Bobcats. The senior is one point off sophomore Dylan Meadeâs team-leading 14.1 points per game scoring average.
Roberts emerged as a leader for Betsy Layne early in the season. With the addition of Meade, Betsy Layne managed to reload and win its second straight 15th Region All âAâ Classic championship.
A 15th Region Player of the Year candidate, Roberts is shooting 53.5 percent (123-of-230) from the field (two- and three-point field goals combined).
