ALEXANDRIA — George Rogers Clark girls basketball coach Scott True never felt at ease during the opening round of the 10th Region Tournament at Campbell County Middle School.
Facing former assistant Mike Murray, True watched his team’s season come to an end with a 58-43 loss to host Campbell County Monday night.
“He had his team ready and I knew he would,” True said afterward. “He does a good job with them. He has an experienced squad and they played like it tonight.”
Murray added that it wasn’t easy coaching against True, despite playing at home.
“It’s hard when it’s your friend,” he said. “Everybody on that staff are my friends. It’s hard, because you don’t want to be the one to knock them out (of the tournament), but somebody has to do it. Before the game and after the game, we’re all friends, but in that 32 minutes, you’re not worried about who you’re playing, you’re just worried about trying to get that win, but it’s hard.”
The two teams split a pair of games during the regular-season, with Campbell County winning 49-45 in overtime in the last meeting and won again with much higher stakes on the line.
The Lady Camels (21-10) advance to the semifinals and will take on Mason County at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The Lady Royals (9-22) defeated Deming 52-38 in the first of two first-round games Monday night.
The contest was the final for Clark seniors Kelsie Parido and Tayloir Rose. The Lady Cards finished the season with an 18-12 record.
“I’m ecstatic that we won, but I hurt for the kids from Clark County, especially Kelsie and Tayloir,” Murray said. “Those are my girls and I still talk to them. As happy as I am for us and as thrilled as I am that we continue to fight this battle, I hurt for them, because I’ve been there with them through a lot of fights and a lot battles and I know the pain they’re going through. I hurt for them, because it’s the last time they will put that red jersey on.”
True said Parido and Rose are “great people.”
“We’re going to miss them an awful lot,” the Clark coach said. “We love them to death and I hate for it to end for them like this. They’ve been to the state tournament and they’ve done a lot of great things. They’ve had great careers.”
Sandra Skinner scored eight of the Lady Cards’ first 10 points and helped the Lady Cards race out to a 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Clark remained in control until the Lady Camels closed out the first half with a 9-0 scoring spree, turning a 20-18 deficit into a 27-20 advantage at the break, leading to Clark’s downfall.
“We played their pace,” True said. “We talked about not playing to their flow of the game and we did that tonight. I could tell early on that we weren’t settled down and we weren’t relaxed. We couldn’t get that way. We used timeouts, but we couldn’t get into the flow of the game like we wanted to. They did a great job of pressuring us and running their stuff, but we never got into the style that we wanted. We wanted it a little slower and under control and then we quit making shots and got frustrated.”
Skinner paced the Lady Cards with 11 points in the first half and finished with 20 points.
“She played a heck of a game,” True said of Skinner. “She played tremendous.”
Campbell County’s 6-foot-3 center Kaitlin Siegmundt led the hosts with 10 points in the first half. Siegmundt scored six of those in the second frame and finished with 18 points.
“She gave us problems,” True said. “We didn’t block her out early and we let her get comfortable.”
Clark narrowed the deficit to 27-23 after scoring the first four points of the second half, but the Lady Camels answered with an 11-0 run, stretching the margin to 38-24 with 2:07 remaining in the third quarter.
Clark closed the gap to nine twice down the stretch, but Campbell used a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter to stretch the margin back to double figures and put the game away.
“We had a couple of chances to cut it to six, but we missed a couple of shots and then they go down and get a bucket and we’re trying to scramble,” True said.
The Lady Cards made just two 3-pointers on 16 attempts and committed 25 turnovers.
