Over the past two seasons, the Lady Cougars had been eliminated from regional competition by the Owensboro Catholic Lady Aces, including in last yearâs regional final.
Grayson County got a measure of revenge Monday night at the Owensboro Sportscenter by ousting the Aces 60-43 in the opening round of the 2012 3rd Region Tournament.
With the win, the Lady Cougars (27-6) advance to Fridayâs semi-final round, where they will face the upstart Hancock County Lady Hornets, 60-56 upset winners over Ohio County in Mondayâs first game at the Sportscenter. That game will begin at 6 p.m.
âThatâs a monkey off our backs,â said Lady Cougar coach Brad Johnson of their win over the Aces. âOur kids just sold out tonight and played hard.â
The Lady Cougars won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the taller Lady Aces 37-26.
âThey are a good rebounding team, and that was a point of emphasis for us coming in,â Johnson said.
The Lady Cougars never trailed in the game. The score was tied twice in the first period, the final time coming at 7-7 with 2:54 left. The Lady Cougars then closed out the period with 10 unanswered points, capped by Kylee Gorbyâs buzzer-beating rebound basket that made it 17-7 as the second quarter got under way.
Kelsea Wilsonâs 10-footer at the 4:24 mark gave the Lady Cougars their largest lead of the first half, 21-10. The Lady Aces (18-15) then closed out the half on a 9-4 run to cut the lead to just six points, 25-19 at the half.
When Grayson County opened the third quarter with an 8-2 run, capped by Gorbyâs 10-foot , pull-up jumper, the Lady Aces were forced to call a timeout trailing by 12 points, 33-21 with 4:58 left in the period.
The lead had been cut to 10 points, 37-27, when Catholicâs Mary Kate Clemens fouled Wilson on a rebound following a missed Lady Aces shot with 10 seconds left in the period. Clemens, who had been frustrated all night by the tenacious defense of Wilson all night, made the mistake of jawing at the official, who quickly called a technical foul, her fourth foul of the game.
Wilson made just 1 of 2 at the line, but followed that up by scoring on a lay-up at the final buzzer and the Lady Cougars led by 13 points, 40-27 as the fourth quarter began.
Two more Wilson free throws at the 6:32 mark gave the Lady Cougars their largest lead of the night, 19 points at 49-30.
But the Lady Aces werenât done just yet. They put together a 10-3 run that closed the gap to 12 points, 52-40 with 3:18 remaining to be played, but they would get no closer. An 8-2 Lady Cougar run ran the lead back up to 18 points with 1:21 left and it was all over but the shouting.
Laura Riney led the Lady Aces with 13 points.
Wilson led all scorers in the game with 21 points and made it a double-double night by hauling down 15 rebounds. Maddie Stewart, playing in her first regional tournament, showed no signs of freshman nervousness as she poured in 19 points and added four rebounds.
Gorby, who played herself into exhaustion, finished the night with 11 points and led the team with seven assists. Kaylan Shull scored four points and added four rebounds, Halee Johnston had three points and four boards, and Cassidy Swift had two points off the bench to complete the Lady Cougar scoring.
