South Warren 69, Butler County 51
#1
The Spartans (9-21) avenged an overtime loss to the Bears on Jan. 20, shooting 54 percent from the field in a 69-51 at SWHS.
"Offensively, we made shots," South Warren coach Derrick Clubb said. "We didn't guard how we needed to. They drove the lane on us a lot, and that's something that can't happen.
"We were good in spurts, but we made shots, and that always makes everything better."
Four South Warren players scored in double figures, led by junior forward Travis Hardcastle's 18 points. Sophomore guard Austin Bybee added 13 points, sophomore forward Brad Logsdon had 12 and senior forward Heath Holloman pitched in 10.
Senior guard Josh Bartley totaled eight points, nine rebounds and five assists.
"We need Travis and Brad to play well," Clubb said. "When we they score, rebound and defend, we're really competitive with everyone on our schedule."
The Spartans led 19-11 after one quarter and scored at least 11 points in each quarter after that. They led 31-21 at halftime, but it was a 27-point outburst in the fourth quarter, including 12 made free throws, that sealed the deal.
"We talked everything out tonight," Hardcastle said. "We had good communication, and it was a good team effort. Hopefully this will give us some good momentum for next week."
Sophomore guard Zeke Woodcock led Butler County (10-18) with 16 points. The Bears turned the ball over 15 times and were outrebounded 31-23.
South Warren plays Warren East at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the first round of the District 14 Tournament at Warren Central. The winner will meet top-seeded Bowling Green on Wednesday.
Second-seeded Butler County takes on No. 3 seed Edmonson County at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday in the semifinals of the District 12 Tournament at Grayson County.
