BARBOURVILLE – The Harlan County Lady Bears pulled away in the second half for a 64-46 victory at Knox Central in the regular season finale on Friday. Harlan County outscored the Lady Panthers 36-19 in the final two quarters to close the season with their seventh straight win.
Seniors Miranda Davenport and Kalee Caroll combined for 38 points to power the Lady Bears in the victory.
“Our kids know who our leaders are. It is a really nice situation where our two seniors lead us. I think our kids look to them,” said Harlan County coach Anthony Nolan. “They work hard every day, and it is nice to see them advance their level of play.”
The teams traded baskets throughout the first half. Knox Central led by two after the first quarter, before Harlan County took the lead in the second. Davenport had eight of her game-high 21 points in the second period as the Lady Bears took a 28-27 advantage into the break.
Knox Central’s Tyra McNeil scored the first four points of the second half as the Lady Panthers took a three-point lead. Harlan County took control from that point, outscoring Knox 15-7 the rest of the way to go up 43-38.
The Lady Bears continued to pull away in the fourth quarter. Harlan County outscored the Lady Panthers 21-8 in the final period to push the lead to 18.
“We got into a rhythm defensively in the second half, and it showed on the offensive end because we got a lot of easy shots,” Nolan said. “There were two or three times down the floor where every toughed the ball at least once or twice and it resulted in a layup of foul shots.’
Harlan County (22-6) returns to action Tuesday against Harlan in the first round of the 52nd District Tournament, while Knox Central will (16-11) face Lynn Camp in the opening round of the 51st District Tournament on Monday.
