South Warren got hot at the right time Friday night in a 48-41 win over Logan County.
The Lady Spartans trailed the Lady Cougars 33-25 after three quarters, failing to get much going offensively.
But SWHS (5-22) went on a 15-1 run from the 4:56 to 14.5-second marks, turning a 36-27 deficit into a 42-37 lead.
The highlight of the run came with a go-ahead 3 from the left wing by Lady Spartan freshman forward Colby Downing.
“The thing about Colby, she’s not afraid to shoot it,” SWHS coach Ken Waddell said. “She wants to shoot it. For Colby’s to go, that was huge.”
The SWHS run started with a 3 from junior forward Brittney Taylor to cut the LCHS (10-13) lead to 36-30.
One minute later, sophomore guard K.K. Burnette canned a trey to trim the deficit to 36-33 and get the SWHS crowd into the game.
“Everything that we do is based upon us making a basket or two,” Waddell said. “And once we made a basket or two, got a little confidence, it’s like things just changed.”
Downing then drove the lane for the Lady Spartans, putting a runner in off the glass to cut the lead to one.
Then after nearly two minutes of scoreless basketball by both sides, Downing hit the go-ahead 3 with 1:05 left.
“I was like ‘Oh my gosh, is that going in?’ and it did,” Taylor said of Downing’s late trey. “I screamed.”
The Lady Spartans used a trapping, “triangle-and-two” defense to keep the pressure on LCHS, keeping the Lady Cougars off the scoreboard late.
“We would team up on their guards, and that really had them frustrated,” Downing said. “They had to get it to other people that didn’t want to make the shot.”
SWHS sealed the win with two free throws from Downing with 3.8 seconds left after a technical foul on LCHS coach Scot MacAllister, giving the Lady Spartans a 46-41 lead.
After starting the year 2-21, SWHS has now won three of its last four games.
The Lady Spartans finish the regular season against Butler County on Thursday before taking on Warren East in the first round of the District 14 Tournament.
“You hear people say that winning leads to more wins,” Waddell said. “We’ve had our dose of being on the bottom end, but we’ve always believed we had the girls that had the talent to get some things done.”
