HENDERSON, Ky. — Even though she didn't play in the first quarter, Brooke Tapp scored a career-high 35 points to lead Henderson County to a 76-53 win over McLean County on Thursday.

Tapp was benched for the opening quarter of the contest as punishment for a technical foul she received in the team's last game against Calloway County.

"Whether I start or whether I don't, I still have to give it my all," said the junior forward, who surpassed the 34 points she scored at Owensboro as a freshman.

Tapp made an immediate impact when she entered the game early in the second quarter. With her team holding to an 18-12 lead, Tapp scored 13 points in the remainder of the period to extend the Lady Colonels' lead to 37-25 by the half.

She posted 15 more points in the third quarter as Henderson County pulled out to a 65-39 advantage.

"We knew that we should have an advantage inside to start out with," Lady Colonel coach Jeff Haile said. "Mercedes (Pruitt) and everybody else who played the point did a good job of penetrating and getting the ball on the block. She (Tapp) was hot."

She was even hotter than she realized. "I didn't feel like I had that many points. I thought I had maybe 18. When I'm playing and in a zone, I just play. I don't think about points," Tapp said.

Tapp became just the fifth Lady Colonel player to score at least 35 points in a game. The others are Lisa Hayden, Margie Speaks, Ashley Hawkins and Whitney Bingemer. Hayden, who holds the school record with 42 points, eclipsed the 35-point mark five times in her career. The others did it just once each.

Tapp left the game midway through the fourth quarter, but not before making an off-balance shot from the block for her 32nd point of the night.

The Lady Colonels also picked up six 3-point baskets from three different players. Maci Brown hit three and finished with 11 points, while Kacie Wallace added two. Brown and Wallace hit back-to-back threes to end the first quarter and open up a 15-8 lead.

McLean County (15-10) stayed close throughout the first half despite making only five field goals. The Lady Cougars were 15-of-20 from the free throw line for the half and 27-of-37 for the game.

Sydney Rice, who hit 12 of her 15 free-throw attempts, led McLean County with 18 points. Kate Slinker scored 16 and Hannah Render added 12.

Henderson County won the junior varsity game 38-25 to improve to 14-2. Samantha Carter and Taylor Polivick topped the Lady Colonels with nine points apiece.
