Please inform me of this. We might hear about the occasional player, but the teams are rarely seen in the western end of the state and usually make a quick exit at the Sweet Sixteen.

2001/2 - Whitesburg made it to the 2nd Round of the Sweet 16
2003/4 - Perry Central made it to the 2nd Round of the Sweet 16
2007/8 - Hazard made it to the 2nd Round of the Sweet 16 losing to Shelby County by 3

1969 Lee Co made it to Saturday morning and was beat by Seneca in OT. If John Paul Gabbard had hit his free throws with no time left on the clock, Lee Co would have been playing Saturday night in the State Championship game.

Pretty sure Perry Central will be out at Marshall County at their big showcase this year. Be a good time to see a 14th region team.

Actually that was a typo, it was 1968. One of the best teams from the 14th region that I have seen play. They were not rated that high going into the tourney. They beat I believe it was Harlan by 18 points and were picked to loose by 18. Next they knocked off Clark Co, who was rated high in the state. Saturday morning they lost ot Seneca. They had Larry Stamper, that went on to play at UK, and Park Congelton that played for Old Domion.
The years before that Breathitt Co had some good teams.

Actually Perry County Central's Girls team is playing Marshall County at Hoopfest, not the boy's team. Durn! I was hoping that watching Hatcher's offense would help me get over my insomnia!

Dream Killer made need to do some research. State champion, UK all-americans, compare KHSAA records with all the regions outside of the Louisville and Lexington regions and see how they stack up.

I am talking about in the last 20-30 years. The ocassional win at the Sweet Sixteen does not count, and if you want to count the regions outside of Loiusville amd Lexington, the 2nd Region has had 3 Sweet Sixteen Champions in the last 26 years. Hopkinsville in 1985, University Heights in 1992, and Christian County is the defending State Champion team right now. Then there is the University Heights dominated All A Classic, which they have won 9 times. The 2nd Region has a current Wildcat in Jon Hood, and one of more memorable Wildcats in Travis Ford.:rockon:

Im pretty sure that Shelby Valley one state in 2009 with the help if Justice...thats mountain born and bred :rockon:

The boys play on December 3rd against Beech, TN @ Marshall County. Watch the girls game too, you'll see a 14th region team destroy a 1st/2nd/3rd whatever region team :Thumbs:.

If my memory serves me correctly, this team was not only the champs but didn't they have to walk a few miles to catch a bus to the tourney....then walk home from the bus stop afterward??

Yeah Jon Hood is a joke. What the F### ever. He was Mr. Basketball in Kentucky wasnt he. He gets to travel the world for free on probably the best basketball team in the country. Personally though, I'd rather be on the floor playing for someone else. He should go to Morehead or EKU. He's a good player. Probably would of dominated the 14th Region.

Up to the end of the 60's, the 14th region was as good as any in the state.
Since then, well facts can't be denied. It just hasn't produced
very many teams that can be competitive at a state level.
Even the '86 Hazard team involved in the controversial
Sweet 16 semi loss to PRP, really wasn't in a league
with PRP. More a case of PRP playing down.
One thing I will say that will seem odd. But over the last
12-15 years we've seen an overall decline in hs basketball
statewide, and a greater focus on football. And during this
time it's actually made it easier for rural areas to produce
teams that can be competitive with the 6th, 7th and 11th
regions teams. Yet the 14th hasn't really done so. And at
least a part of it during this period has been because of
the explosion of focus on football.

Yeah untill last year, Christian Co.winning state, I thought louisville was FAR Western KY. Hate when Jack-Arses start threads like this. :lame:
