In my opinion, 4A teams should beat 3A teams and there should be no way that 3A teams be 5A teams. Obviously there are exceptions to this line of thinking, but by using the scope of size is a fair way to look at this question. To me, it's far more impressive that Bell County knocked off a school that IS an odds on favorite to make it to the 5A state title game. What I give Johnson Central credit for is going to Belfry and pulling out the victory on the Pirates field.
Bottom-line, kudos to all four teams. All of the teams have legitimate chances to make the State Finals. In the long run, these fantastic match-ups going into the playoff week is very gutsy but will prove to be very beneficial to tell all four teams what their strengths and weaknesses are as they make this run in the next season.

strawshaker Wrote:Bell County-Harlan CountyJohnson Central over Belfry. Belfry had held Ashland to only 7 points at home and Ashland contained Johnson Central's running game as well as any team has in the past two seasons. It took Johnson Central about 30 years to win its first game against Belfry and the Pirates were looking to avenge its two recent losses at the expense of this very young Golden Eagles team. The upset was not so huge but the way that JC controlled the game from start to finish was a bit of a shock, at least it was for me.

Harlan County has never beaten Bell County and the Bobcats easily handled the Bears last season on the road (35-0). Bell County's win at home was no upset, IMO.

Johnson Central over Belfry. Bell over Harlan Co. wasn't that big of an upset IMO.

I wouldn't consider Bell's win over Harlan an upset at all, viewing the history of the rivalry i think Bell should have been favored to win this game.

1A Mayfield has beaten 2A Murray, 3A Tilghman, 4A Evansville Harrison, 5A Graves, 5A Greenwood, 6A Marshall Co.

I would think Johnson Central versus Belfry would be the bigger upset although I had a gut feeling that JC would win as they would be up and Belfry would be in a letdown mode after 2 great victories in one game and the pressure all season of not only trying to win their district but also to put their great coach over the top as the winningest High School Football Coach in Kentucky.

I don't know if Harlan County is still the favorite to come out of the East in 5A. I hope they do, but this loss makes me wonder.

Johnson Central over Belfry.....really didn't see that one coming.

Neither one an upset...4 good teams...2 won 2 lost...No big deal and has no bearing on the postseason at all.

JC over Belfry. Don't know why Bell over Harlan is even considered an upset ??

Johnson Central. And to add fuel to the fire. Jude only had 140 yards. If you were to tell me he'd only have that many yards and JC still win? I'd called you stupid!

Only on BGR does anyone actually consider Bell Co. beating Harlan Co. an Upset....Upset really are you people serious.
I think Harlan Co has a fantastic team and have been my pick to come out of the woefully weak, eastern half of 5A all year.
This is not the dominant Bell Co. of the past few years and they may not get past the 3A regional, due to stonger competition in 3A region, but the are still Bell Co. and are the team to beat in the mountains until someone actually beats them.
Johnson Central Beating Belfry is more of an upset, Belfry was playing as well as anyone in the state at the time. But shouldn't JC who considers themselves a 5A power beat Belfry a little ol' 3A school? So is this game even an upset? I don't think this one is either.

None of these are upsets. These are four of the best teams in EKY, if not the best four.
Imagine if they were one big team, lol.
