Nothing but kudos to Leslie Co.. Nothing was given to them (and not even respect, judging by some of the pre-game comments). They came in to P-burg and TOOK the district title. Enjoy it, Eagle fans !!

About Prestonsburg...

Whoever it was who talked about getting a new coach...imo, that's wayyyy off base. The coach and staff are there to teach and orchestrate. Coach James is not doing anything outlandish with the defensive scheme - it's a very common alignment. And Coach John and Coach Allen's offense is the same one which wowed us a few years ago. No... it's the PLAYERS who aren't executing.

The problem with P-burg is no different than other teams have in certain seasons. Sometimes a team has too few players with ability or, as I believe in this case, too many players who habitually apply themselves only enough to "get by".

This kind of player hangs out in the weight-room off-season and sees it more of a club than a place of work. This kind of player doesn't push himself doing roadwork on his own, rather, he does it only because others around him are. In practice, this kind of player hangs back, only applying himself when singled out by a coach. In games, this kind of player simply locks up with the player in front of him, maybe even thinking he's trying, but not giving thought (or not wanting) to know the what, where, and why of his responsibility on a given play. (this also makes the kind of student who's satisfied with "passing" when he could make B's and A's)

Bottom line: A player only makes himself better when HE wants to be better. When HE wants to excel on the field. A team CAN'T approach its potential when there aren't enough individuals who work at being the best they can. Team excellence results from the sum total of individual desire of its players. And individual desire is expressed in terms of how hard the individual applies himself physically and mentally (how MUCH he -really- wants to play).

Note that none of this has anything to do with win/loss record. One of the hardest working, most successful Prestonsburg teams I've seen (in almost 40 yrs. of watching Blackcat football) had Alvin Hall at QB and finished with a 6-5 record in the late 70's. That team had little varsity experience and had a smaller line and slower skill players than almost every team it played. But that team was probably the most hard-nosed, toughest team I've seen on a field. By all measures which matter, that team was definately a SUCCESSFUL one.

Sorry about the sermon, but it irks me when it's suggested that the problem with a team lies with its coach, especially one not so many years removed from taking a team to the State Final. Coach Derossett has proven himself many years over. The same cannot be said for the 2011 Blackcat players.

I believe what you have said in this piece. But, the loss to Leslie was a total team effort. Most kids are the kind you described. Only very few will do what it takes to be a winner without the right motivation. Prestonsburg is not the only team to have these kinds of problems and some groups of kids are easier than other's to motivate. You just can't lay it all off on the player's. The season is not over for Prestonsburg by any means. They can still achieve much if the coach's will do what it takes to properly motivate this team and if the player's respond and execute thier game plan. We know that the Blackcat's have the athlete's and they have the coach's to get it done. It just has to be brought together. Just as the last loss was a total team effort the success in the playoffs will have to also be a total team effort. Good luck to the Blackcat's through their run in the playoffs.
