The Red Sox have told assistant general manager Ben Cherington that he'll be the team's next GM, according to Yahoo's Tim Brown (on Twitter). GM Theo Epstein will join the Cubs once the teams agree on compensation and work out other related details.

Sounded like this was in the works a few months ago. I heard on ESPN radio that the Cubs had actually approached the Sox during the season
