Highlands Sheehan to UK as a PWO
#1
After considering preferred walk ons from UC and Ohio State, as well as scholaship offers at lower tier programs, Highlands Ozzie Sheehan has accepted a preferred walk on offer to UK. Ozzie will be the only "skilled player" allowed to report with the scholarship players I'm told.

Ozzie has extremely nice speed, runs great routes and has great hands. If he was taller, I think almost every major D-1 program would have been hot after him.

Kid is a class act. He'll go to class, won't embarass the program and will work extremely hard to earn a scholarship and get on the field. If he doesn't, it sure won't be due a lack of effort.

Congrats Ozzie. Very glad to see another Bird choose to continue to wear the Blue and White.

How tall is Ozzie?

Easily under 6 foot, I am guessing 5' 10". But this kid is amazing at the way he gets to the ball, and has very good hands. As far as speed, he has above average, but not great. I do think he has a big advantage in that he and Towles have played together so much and know each other so well.

Congratulations to Ozzy! Bleed blue babe!

Coach Collinsworth articulated the skills of Ozzy at Highlands recent banquet -, that not only does Ozzy have great hands and footwork, but Ozzy has awesome football speed and an ability to get past DBs and chase down any pass and make the catch. Highlands repeatedly opened up almost every game this past season with a first play of an 80 yard TD pass from Towles to Sheehan. Why did it work over and over when opposing teams obviously knew it was coming? Acoording to Highlands radio announcers, it happened because Sheehan's speed is deceptive, combined with Towles amazing arm passing the ball 50-60 yards in the air downfield, and Highlands great offensive lines pass blocking, which made for a deadly combination.

Sheehan runs a 4.45 40 and medaled in the state 100 meter last year, with one of, if not the fastest 100 meter times in Highlands recorded history at the state meet. Sheehan also has a huge vertical jump of over 37 inches which came into play on a catch in the Elder game.

Best wishes to Austin Sheehan and to Patrick Towles, one of the best QB/WR combinations ever at Highlands! You guys put up some ridiculous numbers and no doubt could have shattered many individual state records. Rock on Wildcats!

I agree with most of your post, but you are way off base with your talk about his track exploits! Like I posted earlier, he has above average speed, but not great. He is no where near the top in Highlands history as a sprinter(we have had state champions in the 100). Ozzy ran a PR of 11.38 at state and came in 7th place. His average 100 time this year was 11.4975, good but not great. My JR year we had 3 guys with better average and PR's than that. If you look back through HHS track history, there are many, many runners faster than Ozzy! I am a big track follower and if intersted , you can find tons of facts about team and individuals at KYTRACKXC.COM. Did you know HHS boys track team has 2 state championships? There has been some very good runners go thru the doors at HHS.

Per the Kentucky state track site that you mention, last year, Ozzy Sheehan recorded the fastest 100 meter time specifically at the Kentucky state track meet itself of any Highlands athlete ever. If that is average speed, awesome! At this point it only matters what UK coaches think about Sheehan's speed and Towles arm.

I would like to make a few points but first let me clarify myself. I am a long time supporter of the birds (I've been going to their games since before I could talk) and will continue to be for the rest of my life. Having recently had the privilege to develope through the Highland's program, I got to personally know Ozzie pretty well even though I am a few years infront of him and can honestly say he is a great kid. Him going to UK reminds me of a former Bluebird named Clem Fennell, who walked on at UK and eventually earned himself a scholarship through hardwork and dedication. I expect nothing less from Ozzie. However, I do want to emphasize a few points.
First in regards to his ability to blow past DB's. I know I am stating the blatant obvious when i say this, but folks were talking about SEC DB's. Your not gonna find to many "top-of-the-line" recievers who are going to blow by a SEC DB. I'm not claiming that thats what anyone is trying to say, but throwing the fact the he blew past highschool DB's seems a little irrelevent.I'm not to sure but I'm having an extremely hard time buying the whole 4.45 40 time claim also. After watching the combine today and seeing some of those guys run it just seems hard to believe that Ozzie is in that same ballpark. I'll admit that he had great speed for Kentucky competition and especially NKY competition, but I am hesitant to believe that he runs a true 4.45 40.
Secondly I would like to address his size. I know everyone is going to say well look at the Wes Welker type players and are going to try to compare Ozzie to those types. However, how many Wes Welkers are out there. 1. If Ozzie wants to be able to play in the SEC he is gonna have to pack on some serious weight just to be able to take the repeated hits.
Do I think he can do it? Of course I do. Do I think he wants it? Not a doubt in my mind. The cards are falling into place and his dreams are being realized. The only thing that is left for him to do is to just go into camp with the mindset that he deserved a scholarship and hes gonna show the coaches that. Knowing Ozzie I am sure he will go in with a chip on his shoulder and make all us former bluebirds proud. BBN
