PIKEVILLE, Ky. – It was billed as a showcase of two of the country's best quarterbacks, and in the end, for at least one day, the one wearing orange came out on top.
Pikeville junior Trevor Hoskins tied his own school record with six touchdown passes to lead the Bears to a 51-34 win over Faulkner University on Saturday afternoon.
Hoskins, a 6-3 junior from Middlesboro, was 36-of-51 for 481 yards on the day he became the school's all-time leader in career passing yards.
His 36 completions also established a new record, surpassing his own mark of 31, which he set last year at Faulkner and then matched at Lindsey Wilson. Amazingly, his 481 yards are nowhere near his record of 607 for which he threw at Georgetown last season.
In addition, the Bears set a new school record for most points in a half when they posted a 44-21 halftime lead.
But Hoskins wasn't the only player with an eye on the record book. Sophomore Demitri Travis tied the school mark with three interceptions of the nation's leading passer entering this weekend's play, Faulkner junior Josh Hollingsworth.
Hollingsworth entered play as the nation's leader in total offense (460 yards), passing (465.5 per game) and pass efficiency (193.2). On Saturday he posted respectable numbers, going 29-of-52 for 312 with three touchdowns, but was intercepted five times in the game.
Faulkner (1-2) scored first in the game. After causing a fumble deep in its own end of the field, the Eagles went 58 yards on six plays and scored when freshman D.J. Box scored from a yard out. The kick, however, was blocked, leaving the score 6-0 with 11:01 to play.
The Bears scored three times before the period ended to take control. Hoskins sandwiched touchdown passes of nine yards to sophomore Hunter Adams and seven yards to senior Axxel Rivas around a 42-yard field goal by freshman Grayson Quick to give the Bears a 17-6 lead after a period.
The wild second period began with Faulkner crawling within two after Hollingsworth hit junior Chris Kordakis for an 11-yard score. The two hooked up for the conversion as well to make it 16-14 with 13:58 left in the half.
But the Bears scored three more times before Faulkner found the scoreboard again. Hoskins hit senior Bobby Owens and freshman Tanner Napier on 13-yard scoring passes before sophomore Larry West picked off a Hollingsworth pass and ran 55 yards for the score to make it 37-14 with 3:44 left in the half.
The teams traded touchdowns before the welcomed intermission. Hollingsworth hit sophomore D.Q. Woodruff on a 20-yard scoring pass before Hoskins found freshman Shawntez Johnson from 18 yards to send the teams to the half with the Bears on top 44-28.
The Eagles got within striking distance in the third period, as Box scored on a one-yard run and Kordakis caught his second touchdown pass of the game on a 10-yard pass to make it 44-34 with 54 seconds left in the period.
But the Eagles tried to pull within a score on a two-point conversion that failed, leaving the spread at 10 pints.
The only score of the fourth quarter was Hoskins' record-tying sixth touchdown pass, covering 11 yards to Johnson with 13:56 to play.
In addition to the passing yards, Pikeville ran for 122 yards in the game. Senior B.J. Iverson and freshman Marquis Terrell had 42 yards each. Two Bears receivers were over the century mark in yards, as Johnson had 122 yards on six catches and sophomore Jordan Amis added 119 on five hauls, making him the third Bear receiver alltime to surpass 1,000 yards.
Box had 62 yards to go with his two scores on the ground. Hollingsworth hit seven targets on the day, with Kordakis leading the way with eight catches for 78 yards.
In addition to his three picks, Travis added seven solo tackles in the win. Senior Branden Teasley led the way with nine tackles, seven being solos, in addition to a fumble recovery.
The Eagles were led on the defensive side by freshman Mike Norman, who had 11 solos among his 12 tackles and interception.
The teams begin divisional play within the Mid-South Conference next week. Pikeville will be at Campbellsville in a game set for a 1:30 kickoff while Faulkner will host Shorter College at noon.
