The Shelby County football team picked up its first victory of the season, spoiling Henry County's homecoming Friday night with a 35-13 victory.
Junior quarterback Zach Shipley ran for two touchdowns and a two-point conversion, while senior halfback Brandon Ford ran for one touchdown and returned a Wildcats' fumble for another score for the Rockets (1-3), who dropped their first three games of the season.
"It means a lot because we wanted this victory bad," Ford said afterward.
Fellow senior halfback Zakk Bailey also rushed for one touchdown and also recovered a key fumble for Shelby, which hosts Oldham County next week in its homecoming.
The Rockets played without junior wide receiver/defensive back/long snapper Michael Barry, who's out with a knee injury, and junior defensive lineman Hoyt Everson, who's out with a leg injury.
"I'm very proud of our kids, and the way they responded with Michael Barry out and Hoyt out," Shelby County Coach Todd Shipley said. "The O-line really stepped up in the second half."
Henry County (0-5) took the early lead on quarterback Dakota Isaacs' 6-yard touchdown run with 4:23 left in the first quarter.
Bailey's long kickoff return helped the Rockets answer with a quicky 4-play drive. Ford capped it off with a 29-yard TD run.
After stopping Henry County on its next possession Shelby took the lead for good when Shipley capped a 10-play, 70-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was blocked, but the Rockets still led 13-7 with 7:32 remaining in the first half.
Shelby scored 25 seconds later when Ford picked up a Wildcat fumble and scored another TD to make it 20-7.
Henry County scored just before halftime to make it 20-13.
Most of the third quarter was a field position battle, so it was only fitting that Taylor Lay's long punt was fumbled by Conner Johnson, who had signaled for a fair catch, deep in his own territory. Bailey recovered at the Henry County 4. Two plays later he scored to make it 26-13. Shipley's two-point conversion run made it 28-13.
After forcing the Wildcats to go three-and-out, the Rockets scored again on their next possession on Shipley's back-and-forth 25-yard run.
