The girls used a huge first-half run and the boys pulled away in the second half as the East basketball teams rolled to a sweep in the Kentucky High School Coaches Association East-West Junior All-Star games on Saturday night at Bellarmine University.
The East girls took control early and won 101-75, and the boys rallied from a two-point halftime deficit to pull away to a 102-88 victory.
The East players were seniors-to-be from the Seventh and Eighth Regions, and the West players came from the Fifth and Sixth.
Manualâs April Wilson, who has committed to Purdue University, led the East with 27 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
âSheâs a special kid,â said Mercy coach Mark Evans, one of the East coaches. âSheâs a wonderful person, and she makes the extra pass.â
âI just went out there, had fun and smiled and let my game come to me,â said Wilson, who hit 3 of 5 three-pointers and 11 of 19 shots overall. âIâve been working on my offense (this summer).â
The East used a 25-4 run in the second quarter to blow out to a 50-23 lead. It was 59-33 at halftime.
âTo our advantage, we had a few kids who had played together a lot,â Evans said. âI was really proud of the way we played so hard from beginning to the end.â
Owen Countyâs Rianna Gayheart added 14 points and Kentucky Country Dayâs Shelby Hendricks 12 for the East. For the West, Hart Countyâs Lyndsey Burt had 20 points and eight rebounds, and Holy Crossâ Maya Hardin scored 16.
