I have a presentation to do in my appalachian studies class, everybody else is doing coal or music so I decided to do sports. I am going to focus on three aspects of mountain sports.
Great Programs/Teams
Great Players.
And the truly great rivalries.
Any input or stories anyone has would be greatly appreciated, I am going to post this in Football, Basketball and Baseball forums. also any old pictures would be amazing to get ahold of.

You should research the Lou.Male/Lou.Manual rivalry. It goes back to like 1890's. It's the oldest rivalry in Kentucky. I think that the Pineville/Harlan rivalry is the 3rd oldest in the state at 92 years old. Good luck, hope you get an A+.

I would definitely focus some research on the following:
King Kelly Coleman- One of the greatest players to ever come out of EKY and the stories that surrounded him are ridiculous.
Carr Creek Basketball- Kentucky's version of "Hoosiers"
Pikeville Football during Hillard Howard's Tenure- The tiny 1A school from EKY was Nationally ranked and arguably the best team in the State of Kentucky regardless of class at one point
The "H's" of High School Football- Living Legends Phillip Haywood, Hillard Howard, and Dudley Hilton. Also Mike Holcomb who put Breathitt on the map.
Tim Couch- The #1 NFL draft pick was also the #1 HS Recruit in the country. His home games were an exhibition every time he played drawing National Media, Sports Illustrated, and the most elite collegiate coaches in the country.

Was that the school who lost to Ashland in 1928 and went on to the national tournament and more than held their own in the tournament?
Ashland's 1928 national champion team
Ashland's 1961 state champions which featured Larry Conley, the point guard of the 1966 UK national runner's up, and couple other D-1 players. There is a book about that team.

Ashley Judd narrated a three-part documentary about high school basketball in Kentucky a few years back, it was very interesting and you may find it beneficial. It was when OJ Mayo was up and coming at Rose Hill Christian, it covers the importance of basketball in Eastern Kentucky, it could have been better but is still pretty good IMO.
"Kentucky Bluegrass Basketball" by ESPN. You may be able to rent it at Blockbuster or something but I know that Netflix has it. Hope this helps!

Lol I had it on DVD for a few years then let Off The Hook have it. it is a great documentary. As for the poject I have it finished with a week to spare. I think I am going to add a little bit of history about old football stadiums in it. If anyone has any good pictures of the more famous stadiums around here I would Appreciate it.
The ones i would like to have pics of are as follows;
Vipperman Stadium-Belfry
Memorial Field-Paintsville (Pre Remodel)
Eagle Field- Johnson Central (Pre-Remodel, Would love to get a Pic of the old paintings on the entrance tunnels.
Both Fleming-Neon, and Whitesburgs old fields.
And any of the other old stadiums that anyone could get a digital photo of.

I've always thought that the remarkable run of success by Ed Miracle's Lynch East Main football teams back in the 1950s and 1960s was a really interesting story.

There is also another version of KY's version of Hoosiers, tiny Cuba High School in far western Kentucky, in Graves County (just outside of Mayfield for you football guru's) won the '51 (I think) Sweet 16 beating Henry Clay I believe.
It's either '51 or '53 when they won it, there is a book written on it that is a great read for all Kentucky sports fans, entitled, "When Cuba Conquered Kentucky" written by MaryAnne Walker.
