Spencer County 50 - Gallatin County 46 (8th Region Tournament)
#1
NEW CASTLE, Ky. -- Spencer County returned to the boys' Eighth Region Tournament for the first time since 1998, and Logan Dunbar and Trey Wyatt made it worth the wait Thursday night.

Dunbar, a 6-foot-3 senior voted the best player in the region, and Wyatt each scored 17 points to lead Spencer County past Gallatin County 50-46 in a first-round game at Henry County.

Jacob Barmore, coach of the Bears (24-6), was a happy man.

"It's taken 24 wins for (the media) to recognize us," he said cheerfully. "This is the best season in our school's history. We last won a district title in 1984. I was on that team. We have the most wins in the school's history."

Barmore added: "This is an unselfish group. They'll give up anything to win. They don't care who scores. They just want to win."

Spencer County, which beat Collins for the 30th District title last week, advances to Monday's 8 p.m. semifinal against North Oldham (15-16), which beat Walton-Verona. Oldham County will play Henry County in Monday's 6:30 game.

A drive down the lane by Wyatt with 4.8 seconds left gave Spencer County a 27-20 lead at halftime. The Bears extended it to 31-20 before Travis Davis got hot. He scored the last seven points of a 9-0 spurt that pulled the Wildcats within 31-29. A three-point play by Kristian Morgan with 0:02 left in the third tied the score at 37.

It was a battle the rest of the way, with Zak Brown hitting an 18-foot shot to cut Spencer County's lead to 43-42. Wyatt then drove the lane again, and his three-point play made it 46-42 with 1:10 to go.

Shane Williamson's free throw cut the margin to 46-43. After Gallatin County missed a shot, Spencer County called a timeout at 0:40.5. Wyatt drew a foul and hit both free throws for a 48-43 lead at 0:34.5.

Morgan hit a three for Gallatin County with only 0:03.2 remaining. Brandon Miller, who scored 11 points, closed it out by hitting two fouls shots at 0:02.6.

Great game, and congrads to Spencer Co and a big salute to the large crowd they brought. Spencer's crowd compared to the Scott Co and Shelby Co crowds of the past.
